Today we published a story about why so many Democrats are running for president - it’s up to 18 - when many don’t have a realistic chance of winning the nomination. In an era of self-promotion and branding, it’s good business. nytimes.com/2019/04/13/us/…

BREAKING: In Calexico, CA last week, where POTUS told border agents to block asylum-seekers from entering the US contrary to law, Trump told CBP head McAleenan if he were sent to jail as a result, the president would pardon him, 2 Sr admin officials tell me.

Helicopters are circling overhead but per USSS there is "no threat to the president" and first aid is being rendered to the man.
Reporting from @JDiamond1

Trump: "We have horrible old fashioned laws put in by the Democrats....The asylum laws are absolutely insane."
Current and former immigration officials tell me that is at the heart of Trump's frustrations: He wants to do things through DHS, ICE, etc that are currently illegal.
Trump: "We will bring the illegals ... to sanctuary city areas ... California is always certainly saying they want more people ... We can give them an unlimited supply. ... Let's see if they have open arms. The alternative is to change the laws."
President Trump says his administration is "strongly looking at the possibility" of sending immigrant detainees to sanctuary cities including to cities in California.
"We will give them to the sanctuary cities," Trump said of detainees.
"5G networks must be secured...they must be guarded from the enemy," President Trump said.

One WH official summed up succeeding in Trump WH by saying ppl need to adapt to whatever Trump is saying.
Last night, the WH said the idea was "floated and rejected." Now, Pres Trump says putting immigrant detainees in sanctuary cities is back on.
So the WH will now push that. twitter.com/realDonaldTrum…
The White House JUST put out a statement saying the policy was no longer being considered. "The idea was briefly and informally raised and quickly rejected."
Trump is now saying the opposite. twitter.com/realDonaldTrum…
My latest on President Trump and the White House's proposal to send immigrant detainees to sanctuary cities. The plan would have used immigrants' bodies to send a message to sanctuary cities across the United States, including places like San Francisco. pbs.org/newshour/polit…
We show up when a school is hailed a success, or when it is deemed a failure. It is rare, and considered a risk, when we show up as they’re just starting to figure it all out. I think that should change.

It’s also now plainly true that the Trump administration — through its family separation policy and now this proposal to drop immigrant detainees in sanctuary cities — has quite literally looked at the physical bodies of immigrants as a means of carrying out hardline policies.
The Center for Immigration Studies says there are hundreds of sanctuary cities across the United States. A map of cities that limit their cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with 2020 in mind helps you understand Trump’s motive: cis.org/Map-Sanctuary-…
Ashley Etienne, Pelosi's comms dir: “The extent of this administration’s cynicism and cruelty cannot be overstated. Using human beings—including little children—as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable, and in some cases, criminal."
Just talked to a Dem member of Congress who works on immigration who said he was not surprised by the move by President Trump.
I just confirmed that Trump tried to pressure U.S. authorities to release immigrant detainees onto the streets of "sanctuary cities." Both DHS & WH emailed same quote: "This was a suggestion that was floated & rejected, which ended any further discussion." First reported by WaPo.
Confirmed on background from an ICE spokesperson:
Acting ICE Director Ron Vitiello made the following announcement earlier today: “Beginning tomorrow I will be out of the office, during which time Acting Deputy Director Matt Albence will be leading the agency.”

Trump's speech to that Republican campaign dinner was the third-most-dishonest event of his presidency: 34 false claims. He made 102 false claims in all. That's the 11th-worst week of his presidency, second-worst since the midterms. thestar.com/news/world/ana…

Minutes after Trump told reporters that he's the only person running immigration policy, Stephen Miller responded our request for comment from yesterday:
"Only one person in this U.S. government runs immigration policy: President Donald Trump."
"I am concerned about it," Barr says of spying on the Trump campaign in 2016. "There might be abuses that don't rise to the level of a crime."
He declined to explain the basis for his concern about spying in 2016.
AG Barr won't say if the White House has seen the Mueller Report.
President Trump today said: "I have not seen the Mueller report. I have not read the Mueller report. I won. No collusion, no obstruction...The whole thing was illegal. I have not read the Mueller report."
AG Barr says that every page of the Mueller Report had a warning on it and that nothing was available for release when he received it because it hadn't been vetted. "I think summaries are subject to criticism..I think just stating the bottom line is entirely appropriate," he says
WATCH: "I think spying [on the 2016 Trump campaign] did occur," Attorney General William Barr tells a Senate subcommittee. "But the question is whether it was ... adequately predicated. And I'm not suggesting it wasn't adequately predicated, but I'd need to explore that."

Randolph D. “Tex” Alles, who is stepping down as Director of the U.S. Secret Service, says in statement: "No doubt you have seen media reports regarding my 'firing.' I assure you that this is not the case, and in fact was told weeks ago" that DHS transitions were coming.
Senior WH official just told me US Secret Service director Randolph Alles leaving is not connected to DHS Secretary Nielsen leaving. The official pushed back when asked whether there was chaos in the WH and instead said that Alles was there 2 years and WH wanted to make a change.
confirms United States Secret Service director Randolph "Tex" Alles is leaving.
My latest: When Nielsen leaves, only three women will remain in the administration’s Cabinet: Director of the Central Intelligence Agency Gina Haspel, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos, and Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao. pbs.org/newshour/polit…
EXCLUSIVE from @JuliaEAinsley
and me: President Trump has for months now urged his administration to reinstate large-scale separation of migrant families crossing the border, according to three U.S. officials with knowledge of meetings at the White House.
DHS source tells me that they expect Pres Trump to remain frustrated w/ DHS after Nielsen because many of the things Trump wants to do like changing process for asylum seekers & penalizing parents for bringing their kids with them to seek asylum can’t be done under current laws.
Message from @SecNielsen
to DHS staff: “To the brave and dedicated men and women of DHS, I submitted my resignation to the President this evening, I am eternally grateful and proud of what you do each and every day to protect our homeland.”
The acting Cabinet: Right now, @realDonaldTrump
--acting DHS secretary
--acting Defense secretary
--acting Interior secretary (Bernhardt nominated)
--acting WH chief of staff
(also an acting UN ambassador, although that position has been downgraded from Cab level)
DHS source tells me Nielsen’s resignation comes down to Stephen Miller and President Trump needing to work with Congress to change the laws and that until that happens, Trump will get frustrated with whoever heads DHS including Kevin McAleenan.
NEW: WH Official tells me @SecNielsen
will stay for another week for purposes of transitioning.
