The scholars’ “pursuit of knowledge, generosity of spirit, & exceptional talents bring our nation tremendous pride," said @SecCardona. "These remarkable young people have so much to contribute to our country, & thanks to them, I know America's future is bright." [ 🧵 🔚 ]
Since 1964, the program has honored 7,900+ of the nation’s top-performing students. In 1979, it was expanded to recognize students in the visual, literary & performing arts; in 2015, it was extended to recognize students in career & technical education fields.
As directed by @POTUS, the 2022 U.S. Presidential Scholars are comprised of one young man & woman from each state, DC, Puerto Rico, & U.S. families living abroad, as well as 15 at-large recipients, 20 arts scholars & 20 career & technical education scholars.
The @WhiteHouse Commission on Presidential Scholars then selects the 161 scholars based on: 📚 Academic success 🎨 📏 Artistic & technical excellence 📄 School evaluations & transcripts 🤝 A commitment to community service & leadership
To confirm their interest and assist in the selection process, Presidential Scholar candidates submit materials, and a review committee names approximately 600 as semifinalists.
Of 3.7 million high school graduates this year, ~5,000 qualified for 2022 Presidential Scholar awards through: ✔️ Outstanding SAT/ACT scores ✔️ Nominations from CSSOs & partner orgs ✔️ Nominations from @YoungArts, the National Foundation for the Advancement of Artists
