I coached against Hall of Famer Pete Carril just once in my career and we spent five days saying we weren’t going to get back-doored…and then we got back-doored to death. He was one of the giants of our profession, an unbelievable teacher and a great man. RIP, Coach Carril.
My focus now is where do I take each individual player to be their best version on the court. We can already see their best versions off the court with what they are doing for the people of Kentucky. Special group!
My message to the players now is to not drink the poison. Don’t read the clippings. Don’t listen to the accolades of that trip. We were good, but not close to where we are going to be if they stay hungry, yet humble.
But you know what I really loved about the week? That Oscar was our fifth-leading scorer and he cheered like crazy. That’s what makes him special! That’s what makes this team special! They all want each other to succeed!
Just watched the tape of the last game. That team we played was an experienced, physical group. With the quick turn, I wanted to see if we had fight…and I loved what I saw. I loved that it was close and we had to pull away.
We were joined at the game last night by Lawton Shafer and Chad Shannon, who took some of our players deep sea fishing on our off day this week. Great experience for our guys and we ate the snapper last night at our team dinner. Unbelievable!!
Now I’ll do what I’ve done for 30 years: Coach my team and block out the clutter.
I was told about comments Mark Stoops made in his press conference. I reached out to Mark Thursday & will try again. Comparing our athletic dept. to others was my bad. I have supported Mark & the football team through good and bad. I will continue to support them & cheer them on.
These kids continue to amaze me. After doing @Samaritans_Feet yesterday, they came to me & wanted to get shoes to eastern KY flood victims, so we called @MannyOhonme and are sending 10,000 pair of adult & children shoes - the same as we did for western KY. We are here for you!
Morning mass at St. Francis Xavier with Dr. Mair and Robert Lara. Terrific church!
There is so much going on in our world & nationally, but we must not forget our brothers & sisters in Eastern Kentucky as they rebuild. Together we will #MeetTheMoment & help them come back stronger than ever.

As you’re aware, I won’t coach and Bruiser and I will be evaluating the team from a distance. We all understand how important this program is to the athletic department, the state and the university - as it always has been! We can’t wait represent you tonight, Kentucky!
As we get ready for tonight, I am so excited for our players. I wish every team had a chance to do this. Our kids always look forward to it. We open with the Dominican Select Team of older players, not the Under-22 team, because we wanted great competition out of the gate.
If you’re joining us for our open practice today, we are starting between 2:30 and 2:45. We had too much fun on the boat cruise today and are a little slow getting back!
Let’s have these pillars to refer to when waters get choppy!!
Throughout the season we will refer back to the pillars of the Mamba Mentality - Resilience, Fearlessness, Obsessiveness, Relentlessness and Passion. Nothing will be easy with the tough schedule and grueling travel but this team is challenged by it.
Congratulations to @swipathefox on getting married! I would love to be with him but obviously can’t because of Bahamas trip. Love you De’Aaron and wish nothing but the best for you and Recee!
Ellen and I visited the spa while in New Jersey. Absolutely loved it!! They get our vote!!…
This also aired today on national television. Thank you @WillieGeist and @TODAYshow for shining a light on our state. Please know that the recovery from floods and from the tornados will continue and we can’t forget about the people who will still need our help!
Received a great call from Dr. Capilouto today about our players and the telethon & then Dr. Todd stopped by practice with a similar message. I appreciate their support of how our players are representing this program and university! We are always here to support you, Kentucky!
This is about earning your way, creating your own space, learning to fight and - as @Dame_Lillard said - being “sturdy” through the ups and downs. I hope every player who leaves our program has a toolbox to be successful in the next chapters of their lives, including the NBA.
I shared this with our team today because this is exactly what we want our culture to be, including having a kind heart. Everything that @Dame_Lillard says is who we strive to be. We will not tolerate elitism or thinking you’re better than others because you’re at UK.
Look who stopped in the gym yesterday! I really enjoyed getting to coach @KellanGrady31 and I’m so excited about his opportunity in Denver. Proud of you, kid!
Great having my friends JP Miller and Jim Host at practice today!
Darryl Whiten, my college teammate, brought his staff from Frederick CC in for practice. Great group!
My favorite thing about these Bahamas uniforms is that Mark Evans, our incredible equipment manager, let the players help design them. Everything we do is player-driven and about putting players first!…
This is great for both schools and I can’t wait to get the series started. Maybe we make this four years? 👀
Anybody that wants us to play in a 6,000-seat facility, wants us to lose! And I get that. I tried to look back and find the last time UK played in a true regular-season road game with 6,000 or fewer fans. I stopped looking after the 70s.
I imagine there will be some #BBN and some Gonzaga fans too who will sneak in the game this year because there’s more seats!
I’m excited about playing Gonzaga. I’m disappointed that we have to go there first, but to make it happen I was willing to do that. Playing in front of 13K crazy fans in Spokane Arena will be exciting just like it will be in front of 22K fans in Rupp next year.
Just saw our three uniforms for Bahamas and WOW!! They look great. These are just for next week, but I think you’re going to love them. Like everything we do, they were designed with #BBN in mind. Don’t know if we should reveal them yet though. Hmmm…
With @AntDavis23 $350,000 donation, we are now over $3 million in funds raised for eastern Kentucky!! And the part I love is that a quarter of that is from our players and their NIL contributions through shirt sales and autographed balls!! This is what our program is about!!
This player-driven event last night, which was organized in 48 hours, raised almost $2 million. Then with the Crafts’ $1 million match that’s almost $3 million!!! That’s the power of this program and it’s fan base in this state and around the world. Amazing fans! Thank you all!
After watching all of the devastation and, knowing what our players did tonight - he has offered to give $350,000 to the Kentucky Flood Relief. That’s servant leadership in action, that’s staying connected to this program and this state. Love you, Ant.
This is what makes you proud as a coach. I didn’t want to ask any of our former guys for help since six months ago they gave to the tornado victims in west Kentucky, but without my asking, @AntDavis23 got in touch with me tonight.
And also to @kentuckybranded for a shirt that everyone went nuts over. We’ve sold 3,000…and counting!!
A big thank you to everyone who donated, as well as @LEX18News for doing an unbelievable job, @Rupp_Arena for making this happen & donating part of concession revenue, and BHG for feeding the team and volunteers. Tonight was an incredible example of what #BBN is capable of!…
So proud of our players for tonight and so proud that they want to keep doing more. They want to play the Blue-White game in Pikeville. As long as there are no roadblocks, it’ll happen!
Over $500,000 already raised for Kentucky Flood Relief! 📞 859-787-0909 @LEX18NewsebHA

We are having some technical difficulties in the arena with the TV feed, but phone lines are open and our players are ready to take your calls!…
No surprise, but #BBN has responded in a big way with these shirts. Thank you! Let’s keep this going tonight! Forgot to mention that Ellen and I will be making matching donations on the $1,000 basketballs. And you don’t have to be at Rupp to buy them. Call in & we will ship it!…
I am so proud of this team. They are using their NIL to raise money for eastern KY. We will give balls signed by the whole team tonight to the first 100 donors of $1,000. This shirt is also for sale right now & 100% of net proceeds go to the Red Cross:…
I am so excited to add a player like Ugonna. His ability, size and intellect makes him a great fit for our program. He will not be with us in the Bahamas, but will join us on campus on August 20. I cannot wait to work with him!…
Tune in to @ESPN680 at 10am to hear @Oscartshiebwe34 and I chat with @DanIssel44 about our player-driven initiative to help eastern Kentucky flood victims! Our state needs our support, #BBN! Eastern Kentucky, we are here for you!
Our open practice and telethon for Kentucky Flood Relief on Tuesday has only been out there for a few hours and people in ICELAND are already hearing about it! The support from our fan base always delivers!
#BBN, please join us at Rupp on Tuesday as we support those in need in eastern Kentucky. Proud of my guys and their hearts.…
I am so proud of our team and who they are. They came to me immediately after the floods in eastern Kentucky and had an idea to help, so we got to work together. We have a player-driven initiative being announced later today that will support flood victims. Stay tuned #BBN!
RIP to Bill Russell, a great winner and leader, who was arguably the most important trailblazer our game has ever seen. He was a legend on and off the court and left us all in awe of his greatness. RIP.
