Curious to dive deeper? You can checkout the code for all winning entries in the algorithmic bias bounty via the following @github repos. 1st -… 2nd -… 3rd -… Most innovative -…
The most generalizable award in the algorithmic bias bounty goes to an anonymous entrant who thanks @USCViterbi for teaching them the fundamentals of image processing. By adding nearly invisible pixels to an image, this entrant was able to alter the algorithm’s preferences.
The most innovative award in the algorithmic bias bounty goes to @0xNaN who explored Emoji-based communication to uncover bias in the algorithm, which favored light skin tone Emojis. This entry shows how well-meaning adjustments to photos can result in shifts to image salience.
3rd place goes to @RoyaPak who experimented with Twitter's saliency algorithm using bilingual memes. This entry shows how the algorithm favors cropping Latin scripts over Arabic scripts and what this means in terms of harms to linguistic diversity online.
2nd place goes to @HALT_AI who found the saliency algorithm perpetuated marginalization. For example, images of the elderly and disabled were further marginalized by cropping them out of photos and reinforcing spatial gaze biases.
1st place goes to @hiddenmarkov whose submission showcased how applying beauty filters could game the algorithm’s internal scoring model. This shows how algorithmic models amplify real-world biases and societal expectations of beauty.
And now, for the winners! Read on for all the details of the entries that took home prizes. 👇
Before we recap the winners, we want to say thank you to all who participated. Building responsible algorithms takes a village, and we’re grateful for the community helping us uncover the unintended harms and avenues for exploitation that could exist in our cropping algorithm.
Drumroll please! Our first-ever algorithmic bias bounty at #defcon wrapped this weekend, and the winners were announced at yesterday’s #defcon @aivillage_dc workshop. ICYMI, you can watch a recording of the presentation here
Our algorithmic bias bounty challenge is well underway! Today at 12pm PT, join us over on the @aivillage_dc Twitch stream to hear more about it from @dotMudge @williams_jutta and @ruchowdh. And remember! Challenge submissions close tonight at 11:59PM PT.

Big thank you to @Hacker0x01 for facilitating the challenge, @aivillage_dc for hosting us at #defcon, our esteemed panel of judges @dotMudge @adversariel @geminiimatt @jpatrickhall for being awesome, and our #TwitterMETA team for pushing this work forward.
Where: Virtually on @Hacker0x01… When: 7/30/21 9:01 am PT through 8/6/21 11:59 pm PT Who: anyone, anywhere
Why: We are *always* looking for ways to improve our algorithms to reduce the unintentional harms they can cause on the people who use Twitter, and society at large. We can’t solve these challenges alone, and we want your help.
Winners will be announced at the #defcon @aivillage_dc workshop hosted by Twitter on Sunday, August 8th where we’ll also invite the winners to present their work.
Here’s the TL;DR. What: Our first-ever algorithmic bias bounty challenge. We’re openly sharing a Twitter algorithm so adversarial minds can do what they do best. The winners will receive cash prizes.
