What are twitter automation tools?

These are apps that automatically follow or unfollow other users on twitter. They also auto like and auto retweet sometimes. It's called automation because they do these things without you having to click follow, like and retweet buttons yourself. Tools exist for automating direct messages too.

Tools, apps, bots, huh?

These are generally called twitter auto follower tools or auto follow bots. You may also see these apps referred to as mass follow and unfollow software. This is because they can follow and unfollow hundreds of twitter accounts in an instant. They are also sometimes called social media marketing / management software, but this is wrong. SMM is a much bigger field that uses a very different toolset. It's dominated by players such as hootsuite and sprout social.

How do auto follow bots work?

These are tools that automatically follow a list of twitter accounts for you. Most will also auto unfollow the same users afterwards. You will get some real twitter followers this way, but you will also get a lot of fake followers too.

They all claim to offer some kind of advanced AI, but really they just automatically follow accounts that tweet certain hashtags & keywords, or they follow another user's followers or friends. This is how the followers are targeted. They'll do this using a simple set of rules, such as following 100 people a day with a certain word in their bio. There's no AI involved, so don't be fooled.

Will they grow my follower count?

In truth, your friend count will go up a lot faster, and your follower count may not go up at all. This is why these apps auto unfollow too. They need to follow many people just to get one follow back, and because of this your follower to friend ratio will get out of whack really quickly.

So what's wrong with a little automation?

Firstly, twitter doesn't allow most types of automation. They also don't allow aggressive following and unfollowing. This tends to be what auto follower apps do. So you'll usually get your twitter account locked pretty quickly when you use an auto follow/unfollow program.

This is not the end of the world as you can unlock your account, but if you keep using auto following software then you may eventually get suspended by twitter.

Some of these tools will also take your login details. This is where is gets a little scary, because they can then do whatever they like, including stealing your account from you.

What about chrome extensions?

These programs will promise to get you free twitter followers by automatically following people on twitter. They sometimes contain malware and can do some really bad things to your twitter account. Remember that you are responsible for any action that the extension performs on twitter. You will get your account locked, or worse...

Is auto liking and auto tweeting bad?

Yes, twitter hates this. You should only like or retweet a tweet if you have actually seen the tweet! This should seem obvious, but how can you like a tweet you've never actually seen? A tool that auto likes other tweets is sending a lot of false signals, and twitter will remove any false signals it can find. Auto tweeting tools usually create a lot of spam, so these too will get you blocked.

What about auto follow-back?

Following people back on twitter is fine. In fact, many people follow back - even some celebs. Twitter has turned a blind eye to auto follow back in the past, but recently we have seen many tools that do auto follow back get shut down. So, if you want to follow back, do it manually!
