More than 6,600 people experiencing homelessness moved from the shelter system into permanent housing from April 2020 to August 2021. The #CityofTO has engaged 20,000+ times since July 2020 with people living outside, including those in encampments.
In Mark's words: "If you really want something bad enough, you will get it! Have faith in the process and do your part. Streets to Homes not only helped me to look for a place but they truly go the extra mile and give people the chance to succeed."
Within just a few months, Mark was able to secure a home. As we round the corner toward another winter, Mark can now look forward to the warm lights of his own home, away from the cold, wind and snow.
Once in the shelter system, Mark had the chance to work with Andrea, a Streets to Homes Housing Counsellor, who walked him through the process of obtain housing. For the first time in four years, a glimmer of hope appeared on Mark's horizon.
The Streets to Homes team were able to find Mark a place in one of the shelter hotel programs launched as a result of COVID-19. After surviving blazing summers and freezing winters since he lost his home in 2017, it was time to come inside.
Mark lived under a bridge for more than one brutal winter. While it provided minor respite from the wind and snow, it did nothing to ease the biting cold. Exposure and frostbite were constant threats. But last winter, mid-pandemic, Mark encountered Streets to Homes.
There are few things sweeter than the lights and warmth of home on a cold night when winter is at its worst. Living under a bridge with nothing but a candle for warmth is no way to spend a Canadian winter. This #MyHomeMonday, we're sharing Mark's story.
