Today is a beautiful & important day. We are with Cook County @ToniPreckwinkle, leaders & advocates to announce the nation’s largest #GuaranteedIncome pilot at $42M. It launches with a promise to be made into a permanent program offering monthly cash relief to our neighbors.
Retweeted by Toni Preckwinkle
As we move forward, we will carefully study the impacts of this pilot with our partners @UChicagoCrown. By focusing our investments where they’ll be most impactful – by giving folks living in poverty what they need most, money - we will create lasting change here in Cook County.
“The question is no longer if a guaranteed income works, but when we will make it permanent. That shift from pilot to policy is being led by @cookcountygov.” - Natalie Foster. @nataliefoster @EconomicSecProj
“Years from now, people will look back to this day and remember there was an enlightened community against the status quo. Today is about the promise of a new tomorrow” - Mayor @MichaelDTubbs
This pilot also represents a promise to our participants - that this money is guaranteed to come monthly no matter their circumstances.
The name of our pilot was chosen purposefully – the word “promise” reflects our intention for this effort. We know that this program will allow residents reach their promise, their potential to thrive and live meaningful lives.
With the size and scale of problems we face in the 21st century, government leaders must challenge conventional wisdom, see situations clearly, and act on the data to find success
Civil Rights leader and guaranteed income champion Martin Luther King, Jr. once said, “It’s a cruel jest to say to a bootless man that he ought to lift himself by his own bootstraps.”
Yet, we cannot solve the growing problems of entrenched poverty and income inequality if we refuse to acknowledge the other significant, systemic factors - such as a family lineage, structural racism and lifetime of unequal access to financial resources.
The United States has a long history of equating economic success or failure with an individual’s hard work and talents alone, without any regard to the larger structural forces at play.
The #CookCountyPromise #GuaranteedIncome Pilot has the potential to transform communities and even reduce violence. It’s why @cookcountygov is committed to making the program permanent – so families can move on from relief and into long-term resiliency.
#GuaranteedIncome is proving to succeed in cities like Atlanta, LA & Chicago. Why? Because when families are able to make ends meet, they can find better jobs and plan for the future. Learn more at engagecookcounty.com/promise
Proud to announce our $42 million guaranteed income pilot program today. It’s the largest investment in the country and Cook County is the first to commit to a permanent long term program.
