Heads up, that’s no moon, it’s Jupiter! Today the solar system’s largest planet Jupiter, will make its closest approach to Earth in 59 years. The gas giant will be unusually bright and large in the sky which should offer a great opportunity for viewing.
Just over 150 years ago, H.G. Wells, who wrote “First Men in the Moon” and “War of the Worlds,” was born. He was certainly a titan of science fiction literature, but Wells also reminds us that great accomplishments in real life often start with a great imagination.
For 75 years, the USAF has flown and fought in defense of America. I’m beyond proud to have served the Nation in this institution, and perhaps now more than ever, we need a strong Air Force. Happy Birthday to those who’ve stood, or stand in its ranks, and always, always #AimHigh
Today marks #NationalPOWMIARecognitionDay. This is personal to me. My friend and wingman Sam Johnson spent 7 years as a POW in Vietnam, and I wore his bracelet on the Moon. To those who were held captive, or who never made it home, we are thinking of you today.
21 years ago, on this fateful day, we remember September 11th, 2001 – it is a time to reflect and remember the victims, the survivors, and the heroes of that day. #neverforget
God bless #QueenElizabeth, a gracious leader, lady, and our host on return from the moon. On behalf of the Apollo 11 crew, Godspeed and God bless the Royal Family. Sincere condolences.
Just a reminder, today is #StarTrekDay! It may not be a federal holiday, but the significance of Star Trek as a platform that has inspired generations of people to think about space, science, and exploration can’t be discounted. I may catch a couple of old episodes today myself!
America’s work ethic, sense of duty and responsibility is one of our defining cultural hallmarks and a core reason for our success as a people and as a nation. But we all need a break once and awhile – so I wish you all a Happy and Relaxing #LaborDay. You’ve earned it!
I remember this like it was yesterday. Congratulations to all the Cadets reaching Firstie year and participating in this year’s ring ceremony. A class ring is much more than a piece of jewelry, it is the connection to the Corps and the Long Gray Line for all time! #WestPoint
This week, we celebrate the birthday of Orville Wright, a key pioneer of flight and a great American. You may not be aware, but we took pieces of the Wright Flyer on Apollo 11. The Wright’s aviation legacy truly stretches from the beaches of Kitty Hawk to the Sea of Tranquility.
NASA’s equipment for spaceflight missions is just as interesting as the spacecraft – the “Super Guppy” is no exception. Form follows function in engineering, and the Super Guppy demonstrates that principle! Used for Apollo, this amazing plane is still performing today!
Today, we celebrate the birthday of my friend and crew-mate the late Neil Armstrong. He will always be remembered for his long and loyal service to America and we’ll never forget his words as he took those giant leaps. It was a privilege and an honor to serve with him. #Apollo11
Glad to see so much space activity today with 2 Florida rockets launching in 13 hours…the shortest time between two Cape launches since 1967…AND two more launches today, one in Texas and the other in New Zealand! Let’s keep this momentum up! orlandosentinel.com/space/os-bz-3-…
It’s always interesting to look at the inventions in aerospace history and how they worked. The Convair XFY-1 Pogo is a great example as it completed the first vertical take-off and landing in Aug of ’54. It’s important to remember how we got to where we are.
A hearty congratulations to the winners of the research awards at #ISSRDC! The things they’ve accomplished in science and greater understanding in space is quite impressive – it’s what will move us forward in the future. Great job across the board and keep up the excellent work! twitter.com/ISS_Research/s…
One doesn’t have to travel to the Moon to see some truly amazing sights, and we may have one coming up this week in the Alpha Capricornids meteor shower. Get your telescopes focused for August, we might have a good show.

Happy Birthday to a lifetime friend, Don Camp, master of celebrity photography and super salads maker extraordinaire!
Splashdown! The day we successfully returned to Earth, and our great military recovered us from the mighty Pacific. After quarantine, we worked to educate the world on the importance of humans in space, a calling that continues today. It was good to be home. #Apollo11 #NASA
The Apollo Space Shop is offering many #Apollo11 autographed items today to commemorate the 53rd anniversary of the moon landing. Visit: ApolloSpaceShop.com
July 20, 1969, the world witnessed one of the most important achievements in history-humans walking on the moon. Neil, Michael & I were proud to represent America as we took those giant leaps for mankind. It was a moment which united the world and America's finest hour. #Apollo11

53 years ago, we embarked on a journey of immeasurable magnitude and promise, when Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins and I launched on #Apollo11. There was risk and uncertainty, but we had the best ground support, and as a team, we successfully launched and we’re headed to the moon
The first full-color images and spectroscopic data will be released from NASA’s Webb Telescope, including nebulas, gas planets, dying stars and galaxy cluster tomorrow. Stay tuned for what could be some stunning stuff! #UnfoldTheUniverse
I remember 53 years ago this past Saturday, a week before #Apollo11 launch day, the countown "before the countdown" began & continued every day until launch. This was a time of great anticipation and focus as we prepped for the mission of a lifetime.#NASA ApolloSpaceShop.com
Here’s one for aviation and history buffs – the first US rocket-powered flight of the Northrop XP-79, back in July 1944! This was a great achievement that advanced development of aerospace technology for generations.
Had a fun time signing Apollo XI canvases this weekend. They are available at ApolloSpaceShop.com. Have a great week!
Happy 246th Birthday America! Every 4th, I always show respect and give a proud salute to Old Glory, and remember those who have sacrificed for it and protect it. Enjoy the fireworks and have a safe and wonderful holiday! #HappyFourthOfJuly
Congratulations to the new class of NASA flight directors! It is a great honor to be selected for this critical responsibility and it’s a testament to your capabilities. Best of luck to all! #NASA twitter.com/NASA/status/15…
Today marks a somber but important event – the start of the Korean War in June 1950. It is a war I know all too well and it still has direct bearing on our security today. To all who served in Korea, both those who made it back and those who didn’t, you are not forgotten.
Thank you for recognizing our contributions to America. amac.us/real-heroes-re…
Today we remember a great milestone in American history –#SallyRide became the first American woman in space. We spent time together in 08 when Lovell & I shot a Louis Vuitton ad with her. It was a fun day. Sadly, Sally passed away in 2012, but we will always remember her.
So much still remains to be understood, even here on Earth, so mapping the "Factorian Deep" off Antarctica (been there!) is a worthy endeavour. Whether deep in space or our oceans, there's so much to learn! space.com/antarctica-sou…
Today is #flagday2022, when we commemorate the adoption of the American flag. The Stars and Stripes means a great deal to me as it’s an enduring symbol of promise, strength, unity, achievement & hope. I'm proud of this flag and all it stands for. God Bless America.
Today, I encourage you to take time to reflect on D-Day, the Allied launch of the greatest amphibious invasion in history. It was the grit, mettle and the sacrifice of those daring patriots who turned the tide against the forces of tyranny. It truly was one of our finest hours.
June should be a great time to observe planets, a large star cluster, and a summer constellation. Look up! twitter.com/nasa/status/15…
For me, Memorial Day is for solemn remembrance. I always take a moment to honor the sacrifices of generations of patriotic Americans who gave their lives for our country on the seas, over land, and in the skies above. Wishing you all a safe and meaningful Memorial Day!
I have a need for speed! Great to see a new movie about American fighter pilots that may inspire a new generation of patriots to pursue aviation in defense of America. Welcome back Maverick. #TopGun
95 years ago, people may have asked Charles Lindbergh, “What did you do this weekend?!” And he may have replied, “Well, I flew from New York to Paris alone!” This was an AMAZING pioneer feat in American aviation history. The Spirit of St. Louis is still with us!
For the past year, @NASA's Mars helicopter Ingenuity has offered us a perspective of another planet that no mission has ever before! Looking forward to the historic moment when human exploration of the Red Planet occurs! twitter.com/NASA/status/15…
It’s Friday the 13th and my love has a birthday! Happy Birthday my Anca! ❤️🌹 May month is our month, Anca and I celebrate four beautiful years together this month. Here we were at Mother’s Day a few days ago with part of our grand family.z
Calling all Space Art Enthusiasts…Your work could literally fly to the Moon – I guess you could say it's the first-ever lunar art exhibit! space.com/orbital-assemb…
Look to the night sky this weekend for a rare-Moon sighting! space.com/rare-black-moo…
Over the past 409 sols, @NASAPersevere has broken record after record on the Red Planet! Its journey is a welcome reminder that our dreams for future human exploration to Mars are well within our grasp. Keep making us proud Persevere! twitter.com/NASA/status/15…
•A truly impressive photo of the Martian sunrise @NASAInSight! Looking forward to the historic day when human exploration of the Red Planet occurs! twitter.com/nasa/status/15…
On this day in 1972, the Apollo 16 crew, astronauts John Young, T.K. Mattingly, and Charlie Duke, lifted off from KSC and began their journey to the Moon…this would be our second to last voyage of the Apollo program.
