We would advise that doctors can and should reject any attempt to control their scope for negotiation by such demeaning language, and would invite them to contact us should the employer escalate such language into actual bullying tactics bma.org.uk/about-us/conta… 4/4
An employer trying to cajole their staff to accept an uncompetitive rate of pay for such hours, is sending a poor message regarding how they value their staff’s time and autonomy 3/4
Doctors already work a complex and demanding role, and are entitled to decide that an employer’s offered locum rate is not worth their additional time and effort and to seek to negotiate on it 2/4
While we would agree that doctors should honour their commitments to already-agreed locum shifts within the limits of contractual notice periods, doctors are not required to cover long-term or known rota gaps… 1/4 twitter.com/MHA_92_/status…

Having to face abuse at work leaves doctors fearing for the safety of themselves and their colleagues, and can have a profound effect on their wellbeing. We urge patients to afford staff the same compassion that they themselves are shown by the NHS. bma.org.uk/bma-media-cent…
‘We need an honest public conversation, led by Govt and NHS England, about the precarious state the NHS finds itself in after 18 months managing a pandemic so people have realistic expectations, and staff don’t bear the brunt of frustration and anger’ says GPC chair @rvautrey
All NHS staff are doing their best in the most difficult of situations. As @Vish_Sharm notes, even prior to #COVID19, the workforce was vastly understaffed, and ‘abusive behaviour is only going to drive more and more talented doctors away from the NHS when it needs them the most’
Abuse, violence and threats against anyone are completely unacceptable and should not be tolerated. When incidents do happen, action must be taken against the perpetrators.
One GP partner in South West England says that misleading headlines about practices being closed haven’t helped at all: ‘A patient I was seeing face-to-face – less than 3hrs after she rang the surgery – told me it was ‘impossible to see a doctor as you’re not seeing patients’
In the past month, more than a third of respondents reported receiving verbal abuse first-hand; 30% of hospital doctors and 51% of GPs. Half overall said they have witnessed violence or abuse against other staff – including a staggering 67% for doctors in general practice
The results of our latest Viewpoint survey have revealed the unacceptable levels of abuse facing doctors and their colleagues from patients, as the NHS deals with the biggest health crisis in a generation. This has to stop [THREAD] itv.com/news/2021-08-0…
“Too few doctors, too few nurses, too few hospital beds, too few community facilities.” @CNagpaul speaks to BBC News about NHS waiting lists and the urgent need for investment
The Government must act now to tackle the NHS workforce crisis - and be honest with the public about how long the backlog will take to clear. Tune in to @TimesRadio from 4pm, when @CNagpaul will discuss the issue of waiting lists thetimes.co.uk/radio
🚨 If you're a junior doctor@TheBMAA member in England, check your emails - we have sent you a survey on this year's pay round, and actions you want us to pursue in response (including industrial action). Your input is VITAL. Please take a few mins to have your voice heard.3

Extra funding for medical school places is welcome. But it must not be at the expense of funding for the existing workforce, or funding in future years, and there must be enough clinical placements for all medical graduates. Full statement: bma.org.uk/bma-media-cent…

We have added our voice to a letter calling for an end to the abuse and vitriol facing NHS staff from a ‘small but sinister’ group who seek to undermine #COVID19 public health advice and use their platforms to incite violence. It must not be tolerated. thetimes.co.uk/article/times-…
