I agree that the choice is up to the Ukrainians, not to anyone else (not sure which think tanks you are thinking of). But Eliot, are you saying that if the Ukrainians are forced to surrender, as they were forced to surrender Crimea in 2014, that NATO should fight Russia directly? twitter.com/EliotACohen/st…

that ALL these countries are European countries, and let's not foreclose yet another opportunity to create institutions that can provide for pan-European security and prosperity. At the same time, I strongly support enabling Ukraine to push Russia as far back as possible
those other Europeans aren't? B/c they are closer to Russia? Norway and Finland have borders with Russia, as do the Baltic states. Or b/c they were PART of the old Soviet Union, as so we do in fact recognize a different kind of Russian interest here? My argument is
to accomplish European security and prosperity in ways that include ALL Europeans. Put otherwise, why would we agree to admit Finland and Sweden to NATO but NOT Ukraine? And if Ukraine, why not Georgia or Moldova? B/w Finland and Sweden are part of the "West" and
Just as a security agreement b/w Ukraine, Poland, Germany, UK, and US would ensure Ukraine's security? And if these countries would not join such a security agreement, what does that mean for a supposed NATO guarantee? My entire point is that there are OTHER ways
.@Twitter is a hard place to have this debate, but let me try. I am all for ensuring the safety of Sweden & Finland. But surely a security agreement between all Nordic states, UK, US, Germany, France & any other states that might want to join would do that just as well as NATO? twitter.com/MariaViitasalo…
