Girls deserve to be truly HEARD, beyond just listening. We must keep fighting for a world that doesn't oppress Black girls or force them to simply survive, but one that allows them to thrive instead. 🌏 #BlackLivesMatterr, and so do Black girls' dreams.
Over the last 2 weeks, Black girls in numerous cities have led protests against police brutality, sparking movements and powerful conversations around racism. We've said it before, and we'll say it again: Listen to girls. 📷: Nashville, TN; Durham, NC; Westfield, NJ; Warren, MIt
Advocate for Black girls’ rights in education, as girls are disproportionally pushed out of school. This feature from @EricaLG via @nytimes sheds a light on this injustice: nytimes.com/2020/04/04/us/…
Whether you're in the U.S. asking for #JusticeforBreonna or fighting for girls' rights in India, vote for local leaders who better represent the communities they serve and are inclusive of constituents’ voices.
Include Black girls in the conversation. 📢 They are often excluded, which we’ve seen globally in programs for girls, and across the general narrative. We encourage you to learn more with@TIMEe’s latest piece by Brittany Cooper:time.com/5847970/police…0
One way to take action today ➡️ Demand justice for Breonna Taylor, via petition, email, or phone call. You can visit bit.ly/BirthdayforBre… from @30flirtyfilm to get started. #SayHerName #JusticeforBre
Black girls should see their hopes and dreams in Breonna’s life—not their fears. In honor of Breonna today (and every day), identify at least one action you can take to amplify the voices and needs of Black girls and the women they become. We'll share ideas throughout the day.
Breonna Taylor would have celebrated her 27th birthday today. When officers performed an illegal drug raid on the wrong home on 3/13—three months ago—Breonna was shot 8 times & killed while sleeping in her own bed. There still has been no justice. #SayHerName #JusticeForBreonna
This is unacceptable: All girls deserve equal protections and rights. Systems and behaviors must change in order for a world where girls can freely exist. #LetBlackGirlsBeGirls Learn more via this video from @GeorgetownLaw & @gtowngenderjust: youtu.be/L3Xc08anZAE
Research (alongside many lived experiences) shows that even from 5 years old, Black girls are perceived to be: 🔸More mature and less in need of protection 🔸Too aggressive when simply explaining their POV 🔸Deliberately acting out as a child, rather than making a mistake
All around the world, we’ve seen how when teenage girls become pregnant, they suddenly are denied the rights they are entitled to as girls. Particularly in the U.S., there is a similar injustice, but it happens from birth: Racism and bias regularly deny Black girls their rights.
The future we envision for girls cannot happen unless all girls' rights and lives are respected. We invite you to join us over on our Instagram (@shesthefirst), as we share resources, stories, and actions to help us do the work over the long term. #BlackLivesMatter
She’s the First stands in solidarity with the fight against systemic racism & oppression of Black communities. Through—and beyond—our work for girls globally, we commit to taking anti-racism actions today & everyday, because there can be no gender justice without racial justice.
