Who’d have predicted that HTML ordering would matter in 2022? Just moving HTML around without changing the page in visible ways shouldn’t work, but it did. This was +16%!
E-A-T might be measurable! We found not only conversion rate increases but also organic search benefits from adding trust / confidence messaging across multiple markets in the travel industry:
…and timeliness and freshness matter. We have seen this in a variety of tests. Adding the month and year to a listings site’s titles caused a +5% uplift:
…but correct localization is incredibly important. Updating British English to American English on a recently-launched US site had a bigger impact than we would have predicted (+24%):
6. Internal linking structure is hard to test but super worthwhile. We have seen a wide range of impacts. Increasing the number of related article links on one site increased organic traffic by 11%
5. Structured data is a really big deal but its main benefit lies in differentiation from the competition so it’s about moving fast when a new kind comes available. Winning review snippets was +20% in one test:
We tested adding data-nosnippet to all the content on the page to encourage Google to use the meta description on the page as the search snippet, and it had a negative impact:
Speaking of rewriting, it’s quite likely that Google will get better at writing titles than you. They may already be better than you at writing meta descriptions because when they do, they can make the snippet query-specific.
Even with Google’s increasing rewriting of titles, it remains an area where experienced SEOs are remarkably likely to screw up. It’s really easy to make a strongly negative title tag change. This is an area you *have* to test.
4. SERP appearance - i.e. how your snippet looks on the search results page - has a huge impact on click-through rate and traffic. This shouldn’t be a surprise, given everything we know about PPC click-through rate, but it’s always been tough to improve for organic.
3. On the subject of UX, Google said that content behind tabs or in accordions wouldn’t hurt performance in a mobile-first world, but we have repeatedly seen it cause issues. This change, for example, caused a 12% uplift:
2. Google is really serious about user experience. They said interstitials hurt organic search performance and we have been able to measure that impact:
