Our experts don’t anticipate the rate hike will significantly correct housing prices, but it may slow down the pace of their growth. Inflation is close to 6% and will likely remain high for a while, but will eventually ease later in 2023.
The BoC says the economy can handle higher interest rates, and Canadians can expect rates to reach 3% by next year. However, it will be monitoring the situation closely.
Mortgage rates are top-of-mind for many Canadians. This rate change will have a slight impact on what families with variable rate mortgages are paying, and how much Canadians can borrow for a home.
During the announcement, the governor of the BoC said, “inflation in Canada is too high.” He added that the war in Ukraine “has driven up the price of energy and other commodities” and is disrupting supply chains.
