The robe’s interior features more traditional imagery, including paisley and stylized representations of the tools used by textile artisans.
The robe’s motifs are achieved through a centuries old dying and weaving method known as ikat. The final design is dyed directly into individual pieces of yarn, which must then be carefully arranged on the loom before weaving to achieve the desired effect.
This quilted cotton chapan (a type of coat or robe from Central Asia), is titled “Darth Vader II”. It is the work of Dilyara Kaipova. She blends traditional textile arts with modern motifs - in this case the helmet worn by Darth Vader. #MayThe4thBeWithYou
