BREAKING: Democrats just blocked Republicans from gaining a supermajority in the Wisconsin legislature! Key Democratic victories today may have just saved Wisconsin from the MAGA GOP completely gutting the state’s election system.

The firebreak against fascism needs a foundation, and it starts with local races, no matter where you live. Every local election counts, even sleepy ones, even notionally non-partisan ones. Stop the rot at the root.
The school board stuff in particular is very heartening. The GOP's most fascist candidates have been very organised here, particularly around transphobia, homophobia, and anti-Black racism. And they're losing. In what should've been a wave election. In under-the-radar races.
I think, after a year of this platform being a hellmouth of everyone's terror and anxiety (for understandable reasons), this is the clear-eyed perspective to take. It's not pollyanna-ish; it is realism, and realism ain't all bad. twitter.com/ErinInTheMorn/…
It's incredible what happens when people are able to vote on fair, non-gerrymandered maps. The 2018 ballot initiatives to institute independent redistricting commissions are an unspoken MVP here tonight. twitter.com/jefftimmer/sta…

Folks, this result may not be highest profile, but it's one of the most meaningful. Sheriff Thomas Hodgson, the wildly far-right Massachusetts sheriff whose jails are so abysmal I can't put it into words, lost re-election. HOLY SHIT Read @alex_burness: boltsmag.org/bristol-county…

ZOOEY ZEPHYR WINS IN MONTANA! Montana's first trans woman legislator! In a state that has curtailed transgender rights so heavily lately, her voice will give transgender people in Montana representation where these laws are being made. What a wonderful night.

Having people I respect call me a "crosstab truther", accuse me of spreading "hopium" while mocking early vote analysis wasn't great. But it doesn't matter. American voters are rejecting GOP extremism. That's what matters.

Leigh Finke absolutely crushes her opponent and becomes Minnesota's first openly transgender elected legislator! This is a historic night for transgender candidates! It is SO important that Leigh's voice be in the place of power and transgender people have representaiton.

Big news in the Wake County, NC school board! Democrats win 7 of 9 seats there in a race where multiple Republican candidates were pushing book bans, anti-trans rules, and more. Anti-trans policies in schools is NOT a political winner!

I'm highlighting impressive activists talking about these races because--much as the marquee federal-level stuff matters--there's coordinated fascist entryism happening in local races, especially school boards; these races matter *a lot.* And we're winning. twitter.com/ErinInTheMorn/…
A lot of conversation in the trans activism space has been how much worse things will get if anti trans rhetoric scores them a huge victory. I’m not holding my breath that the anti-trans wave stops, but there are positive indicators here.

Worth pointing out that one of the most, maybe THE most hammered GOP priority coming into November was hate and fear about trans people and conservative pundits right now are already considering tonight a huge disappointment.

These races matter. Fantastic news out of Indiana's school board elections. Matthew Keefer, famous for saying "not all Nazis were bad" who supported "parental rights in schools" (forced outing of trans people) loses! It looks like Christy has some LGBTQ+ supportive stuff too!

What I'm hearing from inside Twitter: Several people who were let go on Friday, then asked to come back were given less than an hour as a deadline. Software engineers who got this call I know of all said "no" and the only ones who could eventually say "yes" are on visas. Also:

Parodic impersonation is not fraud. It is free speech. That's well-established. Don't believe me, David? Go watch The People vs Larry Flynt. twitter.com/DavidSacks/sta…

These people will devastatingly humiliate themselves before admitting that their definition of "free speech" is idiosyncratic, that it is not, in fact, based on the First Amendment. And no, I will not let them forget this.
For example, you said this, quoted below. When did that change? And how? What are you now appealing to? And if you can't admit that that's what you're doing, why? twitter.com/DavidSacks/sta…
To make this abundantly clear: you, Mr. Also-Has-a-Blue-Check have been claiming that your preferred moderation policy is the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, and we are pointing out how Musk permabanning things that hurt his feelings are *not in fact* in line with that. twitter.com/DavidSacks/sta…
So we get these cockamamie arguments with all these monstrously pathetic, simping capitalists and wannabe capitalists saying things like "impersonation is fraud!" like they mean it, as if they're appealing to some lofty legal standard beyond their control.
They'd have to admit that they're endorsing and doing the very thing they accused their opponents of doing: developing an extralegal ethical code that they use to judge what types of content belonged on the platform. And they will *not* own up to that.
This *is* Musk's platform and he can run it however he likes. If he bans me for impersonating him, he can do that. It's not a violation of the First Amendment. But these people don't want to *admit that* because then they'd be admitting to arbitrary enforcement of platform norms.
And this is a reminder (as if it were needed) that these people are not fighting for "free speech," but for the right to insulate themselves from any criticism whatsoever. It's the most comprehensively pathetic thing I've seen on social media---and that's going a ways.
There are already actual 1A scholars chiming in with the particulars of why he's wrong here, but there's also just the fact that impersonation is literally a genre of comedy.
