Bottom line is: Emergency contraception is...contraception. It PREVENTS pregnancy — it does not cause an abortion. And that’s on birth control! Learn more here:
The morning-after pill is totally safe. It uses the same hormones as regular ol’ birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. You can get most types of morning-after pills (without a prescription!) at drugstores, pharmacies, and Planned Parenthood health centers.
Where you’re at in your menstrual cycle changes how well the morning-after pill prevents pregnancy. If you’ve already started to ovulate, it won’t work. That’s why it’s best to take it as soon as possible after unprotected sex.
The morning-after pill temporarily stops your ovary from releasing an egg — it’s like pulling the emergency break on ovulation. But timing is REALLY important.
Pregnancy doesn’t happen right after you have sex. Sperm can live in your uterus and fallopian tubes for up to 6 days, waiting for an egg. And it can take a few days for sperm to join with that egg. That's why it's possible to prevent pregnancy AFTER sex.
The morning-after pill is NOT the same thing as the abortion pill, and it will not harm an existing pregnancy. It PREVENTS pregnancy. It stops sperm from meeting with an egg. Here’s how:
Let’s talk about the facts of #PlanB (AKA the morning-after pill AKA emergency *CONTRACEPTION*). Emergency contraception is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy up to 5 days after unprotected sex —the sooner you take it, the better it works.
The Affordable Care Act helped to expand access to birth control. But the pandemic has made it harder for some people to get it. More from @DrRaegan: via @MsMagazine
