It's clear what the blockage is at Kabul Airport (apart from Taliban): the "O2" Afghan troops who form a buffer between ppl with visas and the British/US soldiers who could process them... that's why planes taking off half full 👇…lP
"It is getting worse every day. I couldn't do anything for my family." These are the stories of some of the first evacuees from Afghanistan who arrived in Frankfurt.

BBC reality check shows: it was *Labour* that did due diligence on Trump's Doha deal - not Wallace, Raab and Johnson ...
In Parliament this week, I raised the case of Jamal & his dad. Jamal was a British army interpreter. He's safely made it to Coventry. But the government's relocation scheme denied this to his dad, who's still in grave danger. He and all those at risk must be offered safety.

Labour's Dan Jarvis, ex military: "catastrophic failure of international political leadership"
... Mercer (to Johnson): Listen to veterans, not to the people you choose to employ around you who don't believe veterans issues are worth the political capital...
Tory Johnny Mercer, who I've campaigned against, speaking again movingly about UK veterans - and laying out the tasks: Johnson has *consistently failed to honour what he said he would do* (for veterans) since he became PM
We will soon hit the first press deadline. 13:00 news bulletins. Will any journalist stand up and try to spin Afghanistan as anything other than a political catastrophe for Johnson? May and Tugenhadt eviscerated him. So did Starmer.
Tory backbenchers articulating the truth v clearly: Britain has been strategically defeated and shamed through incompetence and lack of focus. Will Johnson still be PM by Christmas?
Ellwood: this is a humiliating strategic defeat ... Taliban control more territory than they did in 2001. Tory traditionalists just cannot process the fact that the US electorate has had enough of the "unipolar world"...
Tobias Ellwood (another military veteran Tory MP) - if there was a vote in the House, the govt would not have the support of the House. Predicts a renewed civil war...
Given the mood of the Tory backbenchers; the clear alternative spelled out by Tugenhadt - multilateralism/ competence - and the likelihood of worse news out of Kabul... I'm starting to think Johnson is finished.
Davey: Johnson and Cabinet cannot escape culpability for disaster. Lack of influence in DC, negligent inability to master brief and plan properly. Johnson is a national liability.
Ed Davey, Libem leader, failure to make alliances is one reason we are weaker. Foreign policy catastrophe - US withdrawal was avoidable mistake. Could not believe Biden's lack of awareness...
Its not often that I agree with every word of a Conservative MPs speech but @TomTugendhat speech on Afghanistan calling for a global, multilateral, humanitarian and patient peace centred approach is a welcome change from what we hear from the Government

... this is what defeat looks like. Spontaneous applause across benches.
... calls for invigorating links with Europe, NATO, Japan, A/NZ... reflects absolute exasperation with Biden/Trump on Tory backbenches...
Tory MP Tom Tugenhadt speaking movingly as a veteran. Flays Biden for his attack on the Afghan army. We the West, the UK does not have determination and patience. Could be a vv difficult lesson for our allies.
6/ Another mea culpa for following the 8 July feed earlier but if you watch it, it is totally off the ball, with only vet MPs actually engaged in the real risks... it is worth contrasting to today's abject and panicked response from HMG.
5/ Large parts of Labour left can live with Starmer's line of attack, especially as it is paying off, and sowing disarray among Tories...
4/ Also, FWIW, the Labour left never had a "pull out now" position. Having opposed the war, figures like McDonnell always supported negotiated de-escalation and peace process... hence Starmer not facing "anti-imperialist" backlash from his backbench...
3/ And we are not really yet at the maximum moment of danger. That comes when the Taliban start making signals they have had enough of Kabul Airport... and then when major refugee movements start...
2/ I doubt much of the content will land with voters, who are famously unaware of foreign policy issues, but they are aware of Johnson's personal reputation - which is the entire sell of his govt - and is now in tatters...
