My Naija people, Now that the elections are over, it is time for us to focus and demand accountability. We asked for the issues that mattered most, and you provided answers. For that alone, "our voices will remain loud and be heard. #VoteYourFuture

With the intensity of #tribalism and #hatespeech, public officials have greater responsibility to build a fairer society. I remember a tool, the #VeilofIgnorance” helps you envision a fair society by pretending you don't have your personal biases, circumstances and privileges.

And how much comes to Africa, in 2021, just 36% of the Bank’s funding. So collectively the global powers-that-be have a choice. Either watch many countries suffocate with the polycrisis or activate institutions whose mandate it is to act at times like these. #Liveyourmission.

Their track record of response during the Covid-19 pandemic was nothing to write home about either. PM #MiaMottley of Barbados says the #WorldBank, “no longer serves the purpose in the 21st century that they served in the 20th century”.

22 African countries are at risk of debt distress, yet the #WorldBank and #IMF are accused of being too slow and provide too light a response. The average time it takes the #WorldBank to disburse funds from project application to disbursement, 465 days 😱

COVID19 threw 70 million people to extreme poverty in 2020..estimated 7% of the world will still be living in extreme poverty in 2030. One would argue if these institutions were working optimally we wouldn't see the length/depth of economic challenges many countries are facing.

After #WWI the #WorldBank and #IMF were created to rebuild Europe in that #polycrisis. Since then, the #WorldBank has evolved into a global institution with two goals: 1) reduce poverty 2) increase prosperity. Look around, poverty has increased globally

Sadly, they aren't working well in this #polycrisis…at least not for low & mid-income countries. Rich countries typically have a way out...when all else fails, they just print money (aka quantitative easing). The global rules favour them...but that's a story for another day 🤦‍♀️

When will the storm ease? What are we, collectively, going to do about it? Well, since this is not the first time the world has faced overlapping crises, let's turn to some tools and institutions that were created to support the world in crisis like the World Bank, the IMF etc.

From the pandemic to fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war, to inflation to debt overburden, to education challenges to climate catastrophes - developing economies just can't catch a break. And to top it off, a strong US dollar makes their huge debts even harder to pay off.

Every so often there are words that define the geopolitical moments we are in. The buzzword of the moment is 'polycrisis' 🌍- multiple crises happening at once with significant impact. Let's dive into what needs to be done to catch a break. Follow this 🧵 for insights 👇
