The BBC has responded to the arrest of one of its journalists in Shanghai today with the following, uncharacteristically striking quotes. Including the revelation that he was kicked and beaten by police. A shocking development.

I’m in Beijing at the scene of the protest. Mostly young people. They’re chanting no to Covid tests and yes to freedom. Large police presence. Also people hold white papers like in Shanghai - symbolic protest against censorship. Lots of honking cars in solidarity twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

Crowd is no longer only young and students. Cars coming to see, parked on flyover to see. An old lady joined in cries of “liberate Beijing” and “liberate China” with “let the children go back to school”

Amazing, stunning protests happening across China, at a scale not seen in decades. Such incredible bravery & courage. Exactly this. Despite there being few places in the world where people are in greater need of asylum. twitter.com/gavafox/status…
5/5 So, if you're seeking sanctuary from persecution in the UK and aren't from from Ukraine or Hong Kong (& to a far lesser degree, Afghanistan) your chances of being successful are really rather slim. And chances of being eligible or selected for legal entry almost negligible.
4/5 - Certain clauses in the new Nationalities and Borders Act, which came into force in June '22, are in contravention of international laws to which the UK is signatory. - In any case the UK does not have the means to prosecute vast majority deemed illegal under new law
3/5 - It's not possible to claim asylum from outside UK. - New legislation means almost all those seeking asylum in the UK now arrive illegally, though the process of seeking asylum once here is not illegal. - Most arriving irregularly will seek asylum so are not really illegal
2/5 - A comparatively tiny number of Afghans have been offered sanctuary since the fall of Kabul (11,303 to Aug '22). - From the rest of the world fewer still have been grated UK visas under legal resettlement schemes (1,622 people & 5,290 dependents in yr ending June '22).
1/5 A few important *facts* on the UK's widely debated migrant crisis: Vast majority of people issued visas under UK resettlement schemes (the much talked about legal routes) in the last year or thereabouts are from Ukraine (over 170,000) & Hong Kong (107,012). twitter.com/NicolaCareem/s…
Home Secretary @SuellaBraverman & Permanent Secretary @MatthewRycroft1 give evidence to the Home Select Committee, acknowledging that there are no longer any legal routes for many genuine asylum seekers to enter the UK.
Some folks didn't get the significance of me presenting the news with my dreadlocks. In my lifetime, TV was a place where the BBC, a public funding media, paid David Baddiel to do racist Blackface whilst mocking footballer Jason Lee's locks. This dehumanised all black people 1/4

Despite the reactions to this viral video, there’s nothing to suggest these men were guilty of anything other than being present on a busy street. Important point which govt. are not challenged on rigorously enough - the Nationality & Borders Act contravenes the 1951 Refugee Convention.
