P.S. I brought some brownies for these crews. Fire fighters burn 10,000 calories per day on the fire lines. @CalFire has an incredible nutrition operation to keep their calorie intake high. Plus, they can eat all the brownies.
I visited the #CaldorFire base camp yesterday. An emotional support services trailer was front and center: support dogs, therapists, thank yous from kids, coloring books and and treats. Firefighters need both a mental break and structured support coming off the fire lines. 1/2
Grateful mental health support is being desgimitized. Emotional support is critical to a fire fighter’s capacity to stay safe on fires for months at a time. Most of these crews have been mobilized since July 4th. A fire chief told me crews were exhausted but not demoralized 2/2
I've just described that this air show worked well bc it was partially in light, flashy fuels and lower density of trees. Imagine if more of our landscapes were managed to produce a lower density of fuels, with open woodland mosaics, via brush removal and prescribed fire. 8/10
Live @AlertWildfire camera views are depicting a fast-moving fire in heavy vegetation with populated areas in essentially every direction. Heavy spotting up to 1/2 mile ahead of fire is visible. Aggressive air attack will help, but this one poses major risk to Sonora area.#CAfiretwitter.com/Weather_West/s…
A Red Flag Warning has been issued for portions of the Sacramento Valley and surrounding foothills for Friday morning into Saturday morning. Gusty northerly winds, dry fuels, and low humidity will bring critical fire weather conditions. Please practice fire weather safety! #Cawx
A Local Assistance Center will open tomorrow in El Dorado County to assist #CaldorFire survivors. Watch the video for more on the help provided at LACs.

Smoke plumes already emanating from the brand new #AirolaFire and #BennettFire--both of which are burning in or near the wildland-urban interface in the Sierra Nevada foothills this evening. Large smoke plume from existing #CaldorFire continues. #CAwx#CAfire
#CaldorFire is at 126,000 acres, 11% containment and over 460 homes destroyed.
There are critical populations on every front of this fire and the terrain is extremely difficult.
Cooler weather could help progress today. twitter.com/CALFIREAEU/sta…
As the #CaldorFire moves further east towards the high country, it will begin to hit areas affected by the large blowdown event this last winter. This is what we often describe as interacting forest disturbances, and it can result in unexpected fire behavior. 1/8
Many mountain communities make their entire year of income during the 100 days of summer tourist season, which has been lost to fires. #DixieFire, #CaldorFire, #TamarakFire have been devastating. Even those with homes and business still standing have a long road to recovery. 2/2
There are currently 42,000 Californians displaced from wildfires. Being displaced for weeks can be financially catastrophic -out of work, thousands $$ for food and shelter. If their power is out, they loose the contents of their freezer, which for some is a savings account. 1/2 twitter.com/Cal_OES/status…
BREAKING: @SecDef Lloyd Austin has ordered the the Civil Reserve Air Fleet to activate, requesting six to 18 aircraft from each of the U.S. commercial airlines to be prepared to assist in the airlift of Afghans and Americans from Afghanistan. by @MarcusReports and me
⚠️Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11am - 8pm Saturday for the vicinity of the #CaldorFire. Gusty winds & dry conditions may lead to rapid spread of active wildfire.
Be sure to take action immediately if told to evacuate by local officials! #cawx#CAFire
I'm hosting several fire evacuees and asked them what I could do to make them more comfortable. They said: "Please ensure we don't lose our governor."
I hope you'll join me on Saturday in Roseville to reach neighbors and remind them to #VoteNoOnRecall. twitter.com/placerdems/sta…
Voter turnout expert here chiming in to say that texting 10 friends and reminding them to vote is highly effective. Ballots must be postmarked by Sept 14. No stamp needed. I'm personally voting NO on the recall because it's an undemocratic power grab by bad actors. twitter.com/emilybest/stat…
If you would like to support the victims and evacuees of the #CaldorFire, the El Dorado Community Community Foundation has established a fund to support those impacted by the fire: eldoradocf.org
Note: This is also the link for getting support.
We wont know for a while the impact this fuel reduction had or how it was tactically used in the fire, but as a neighbor, I'm so grateful for the years of effort that helped everyone evacuate safely from a massive and unpredictable fire across gold-rush era infrastructure. 3/3
While we are in for difficult days ahead, I want to acknowledge Mark Egbert at the El Dorado Resource Conservation District who worked tirelessly to coordinate State, Federal, Industry, and local $$ to improve fire safety along Hwy 50 communities like Sly Park 2/
The #CaldorFire is hitting close to home. It's burning at the edge of my old neighborhood of Sly Park Hills where I still have lots of friends and family.
I'm so grateful neighbors evacuated and I'm so grateful for the heroics of @CAL_FIRE and @usfs_r5 for holding the line 1/ twitter.com/YubaNetFire/st…
Enjoying my new office/house mates, @MsMelMead and @evoetsch while they are evacuated from the #Caldorfire. Nothing like two friends, two dogs and a cat to liven up the place. Fingers crossed the newest member of the family doesn’t make a surprise entrance this week!
#CaldorFire is at 53,000 acres this morning.
I'm so grateful that crews held it to the east side of Jenkinson Lake through the night -- keeping it out of neighborhoods.
But my heart aches for our neighbors in Grizzly Flat who lost everything. twitter.com/CALFIREAEU/sta…
Again, this bears repeating since a lot of folks are apparently still unaware: the #CaldorFire is turning into a potentially very dangerous & imminent threat for folks living in the woods east and northeast of Pollock Pines near and along Hwy 50 corridor. #CAwx#CAfire
As a result of the #CaldorFire in El Dorado and Amador counties, an evacuation shelter is opening at the Cameron Park Community Center, 2502 Country Club Drive, Cameron Park, El Dorado County, CA, 95682
US can save THOUSANDS more Afghans this week simply by allowing commercial/charter evacuations to run parallel with their AmCit evacs. USG can prioritize our own, while letting other humanitarian efforts proceed
High winds Tuesday and dry, heavy fuels will make the #CaldorFire unpredictable. Pollock Pines is a suburb in a forest. Most neighborhoods feed out onto narrow windy roads. Play it safe tomorrow. If the fire starts moving, don't wait for evacuation orders, just leave. twitter.com/CAL_FIRE/statu…
A Fire Weather Watch has been posted for Tuesday night and Wednesday across much of the Sacramento Valley and surrounding foothill and mountain terrain. Gusty north to northeast winds may lead to critical fire weather conditions. #CAfire#CAwx
Please take smoke exposure seriously -- stay inside if you can. Get a good filter inside. If you have to be outside wear an N-95 mask which filters PM 2.5 (wildfire smoke). Check purpleair.com to see the air quality near you. twitter.com/Weather_West/s…
The Taliban hasn’t won a single battle. The Afghan National Army has run away from every fight. Their utter failure - after the US spent 20yrs and billion$$ to build the ANA that had years and years to plan for this - is the primary reason for the speed and scale of this crisis.
For those more focused on blame than saving what lives we can, please distinguish proximate cause from primary cause. Biden doesn’t make list of Top 5 Leaders Most Responsible for Losing Afghanistan: 1. Cheney (w/ Rumsfeld), 2. Bush, 3. Karzai (w/ Obama), 4. Trump & 5. Ghani.
