Alongside generous business and community partners, we've announced the creation of the Afghan Community Fund.
This fund will help fill the gap for the 765 Afghan refugees coming to our state, providing for legal support, health care, education, and more.
Today, the nation lost a man of undaunted courage and a champion of character. A statesman & trailblazer, devoted to America and the cause of liberty, Colin Powell’s legacy of service & honor will long inspire. Ann & I offer our love & sincere condolences to Alma and his family.
“What Roosevelt and his enlightened Republican opponents(…) understood is that American liberties would be profoundly less safe in an illiberal world. It is not clear that American politicians, or large swaths of the American public and its elites, grasp that today.” twitter.com/TheAtlantic/st…
There is already an existing carveout where Democrats can do it themselves—it’s called reconciliation. ⬇️
Rep. Yarmuth, 9/19: “We can do it through reconciliation”
Leader Hoyer, 9/28: “Reconciliation is one option and that’s on the table” twitter.com/billkristol/st…
I’ve spent countless hours working alongside Kyrsten Sinema. She is smart, hard working and principled. We don’t always see eye to eye, but I respect her. The harassment she has endured is inexcusable and disheartening. It reflects so poorly on the bullies and abusers.
“That don’t make no sense!” Passing “transformative” legislation on health, climate, child care, education, taxation, transportation, and Medicare that’s being negotiated by only a small handful of people, without public input and broad legislative involvement, is madness.
The women athletes appearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee today are stunningly courageous. It requires immense strength to share such heartbreaking stories, but their words speak truth to power. We must ensure institutions protect our athletes & young people from abuse.
A test: does what we choose to watch, read & hear make us angry and vengeful or alternatively, does what we choose to watch, read & hear make us more appreciative, hopeful, empathetic and loving? That choice shapes who we and our nation will become; “as a man thinketh, so is he.” twitter.com/nbcnews/status…
What struck me the most after the attacks on 9/11 was the unity we felt as Americans for our country–the boundaries between us seemed to disappear.
May the memory of those we lost inspire us to heal our divisions and unite us on our path forward to meet the challenges ahead. twitter.com/DeseretNews/st…
Today, the flood of emotions returns: crushing sorrow for the lost, heartache for the loved ones, glory laden appreciation for the heroes. May our hearts be filled with their memory, and our souls with their love for family and country.
Today, on the 20th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on 9/11, we think of those who lost their lives that tragic day and all of those who have bled and died for our freedom. May we continue to look to the American flag as a symbol of their sacrifice.
This loss tears at our collective soul. As we read their stories, it is apparent that these brave men and women truly represent our very best and finest. God bless our fallen servicemembers. Your sacrifice will not be forgotten. You will not be forgotten 🇺twitter.com/usmc/status/14…YC
Jacques was a magnificent leader who greatly exemplified Olympic values—excellence, friendship and respect. He has shaped the Olympic movement for the better. It was a true honor to serve alongside him in 2002. My prayers are with his family and loved ones. twitter.com/olympics/statu…
One of Utah’s own laid down his life to protect Americans and Afghans alike. Ann and I send our deepest condolences to Staff Sgt. Taylor Hoover’s loved ones. We are in debt to him and his family for their sacrifice. deseret.com/utah/2021/8/27…
They represented the very best and finest of America, laying down their lives to aid the most vulnerable in perilous circumstances. This loss of life tears at our collective soul. God bless our fallen & wounded Marines, their families and all of our servicemembers in harm’s way.
Horrific terrorist attacks outside Kabul airport. My heart breaks for the U.S. servicemembers wounded in the explosion and the innocent Afghan lives lost. I am inspired by the strength and compassion of our troops and pray for their safety.
The Administration cannot continue to defend the indefensible: Civilian citizens and our Afghan partners should always leave first—then the military. We cannot abruptly abandon the people who helped us over the past 20 years and leave them to face the Taliban alone.
I understand but disagree with those who felt we should leave Afghanistan; I cannot understand why it has been done with such tragic human cost; without an effective strategy to defend our partners; and with inestimable shock to our nation’s credibility, reliability, and honor.
America must not stand idly by as our Afghan friends are brutalized by the Taliban. For honor, for meaning of lives lost, and for simple humanity, the President must urgently rush to defend, rescue, and give and expand asylum. There is no time to spare.
The Biden administration’s unwillingness to alter the Afghan withdrawal plan based on changing circumstances on the ground & the grave implications for US security interests is a tragedy & a cause for serious concern about how the administration will deal with global challenges. twitter.com/CBSNews/status…
As expected, CBO confirms half the bill is paid for with new revenue that “scores.” The other half is paid for with savings and other revenue (unused UI, unused COVID $) that don’t score under their rules, but they are real dollars.
If COVID with variants becomes a multi-year reality, we (the @US_FDA) will need to move even faster to approve boosters and vaccines—especially if they are already tested and approved in other countries, as with the booster given today in Israel.
Being pro-life doesn’t just mean advocating and protecting the unborn. I also care deeply for the living and don’t want more people to die from #COVID19. Everyone that is able should get the vaccine: cdc.gov/coronavirus/20…
I love and admire Simone Biles and our Olympians. Beyond their determination and sacrifice, they evidence the greatness of the human spirit, in victory and in defeat. I take pride in them, not so much for the medals they win as for the grace, humanity & character of their hearts.
The nation will remember Mike Enzi as a man of integrity and character. We would all do well to follow his example of treating others with respect and dignity. Ann and I share our profound condolences and sincere prayers for his family and loved ones.
The Administration is promoting #ChildTaxCreditAwarenessDay, but POTUS’s plan is just temporary and adds to the debt. My plan makes a permanent commitment to American families and is fully paid for. We have the opportunity for a lasting, historic achievement if we work together. twitter.com/potus/status/1…
I’m not the “birthing person” of five boys, I’m their mother. With all the sacrifice, joy, commitment, hardship, and love that comes with that. The Biden Administration diminishing motherhood to “birthing person” is simply insulting to all moms.
Some policies that can realistically stem the illegal immigration crisis:
- Completion of the barrier at our southern border
- Enact mandatory E-Verify
- Require asylum seekers to apply in their home country or the nearest safe location
The VP’s campaign to address the “root causes” of illegal immigration won’t solve our current crisis. We can’t eradicate poverty and crime here at home, let alone across all of Latin America. Our free enterprise system will always lure people in search of better opportunities.
Today, I reflect on the love and support @AnnRomney has shown our five sons. What a blessing she has been in all of our lives. I also remember the values and lessons my mom taught me. To all of the moms out there—happy Mother’s Day!
There’s a groundswell in Congress, and across the political spectrum, to update policies to meet the needs of families. We must work in a bipartisan manner to update policies to help American families, while not penalizing marriage or stay-at-home parents. wsj.com/articles/famil…
With the U.S. birthrate reaching an all-time low, we should remove financial obstacles for families to have kids, encourage families to support themselves, and treat families the same whether both parents work or one stays at home. My op-ed in the @WSJ: wsj.com/articles/famil…
POTUS’ claim that “corporations aren’t paying their fair share” is beneath him. If a company earns a profit, it only goes 3 places: taxes, growing the company, &/or shareholders. $ to shareholders is ALSO taxed, taxing the profit TWICE. The “share” going to taxes includes both. twitter.com/thehill/status…
Every person of conscience draws a line beyond which they will not go: Liz Cheney refuses to lie. As one of my Republican Senate colleagues said to me following my impeachment vote: “I wouldn’t want to be a member of a group that punished someone for following their conscience.”
The infrastructure proposal led by @SenCapito is wisely focused on actual infrastructure and addresses real deficiencies. It’s a responsible, solid step forward, and the Administration should welcome efforts to find common ground and meet us at the negotiating table.
The Administration wants yet another multi-trillion dollar jobs/stimulus bill, this time under the guise of infrastructure. It is Covid, not inadequate stimulus, that slows hiring; infrastructure funding should be strictly targeted to actual infrastructure needs.
