We can’t separate violence in our society from violence in our public policies.

10/ Peace creation stresses inner as well as outer peace, forgiveness & love as much as activism, recognizing power in meditation as much as the need for political change. Non-violence addresses both the inner & outer self - the most powerful antidote to the violence of our times
9/ Who we are now is as important as what we do, our state of being as important as the state of our doing. There is no contest between personal and global transformation. The work is on both now; particularly in these dangerous and violent times, they are one and the same thing
8/ We have to heal America from the inside out, recognizing that everything we do is imprinted with the consciousness with which we do it. Our every word and every action will contribute to either the violence or the healing of the times in which live.
7/ So yes we have a problem. But any problem can be dealt with if it’s faced. And we have to face it in ourselves - not only in our country but in our hearts. To route out the violence there - the hatred and attacks on others that originate with us: that is where the work begins.
6/ All those things are true before we even get to the blood on the hands of the NRA, the insanity of all the gratuitous violence in video games and movies, and the toxic trash heap of emotional and psychological violence accumulated daily on social media.
5/ …our environmental policies are violent to the earth, our food & chemical policies are violent to the body, our criminal justice system is violent to POC, our incarceration system is violent to inmates, our police are often unnecessarily & even brutally violent to citizens.
4/ We have to begin with brutal honesty, a willingness to face the various layers of passive as well as aggressive violence that permeate our society. Our economic policies are violent to the poor, our military policies are violent where they don’t have to be…
3/ We can’t live our lives just wondering who will be next, what routine experiences might now be considered dangerous. We can see this as a moment for the emergence of a new peace movement in the US, built on commitment to the creation of a non-violent field of energy and action
2/ Groups have shadow sides just as individuals do, and when a character defect is on full display it’s an opportunity to face it, deal with it, heal it and evolve beyond it.
1/ From neo Nazi communities to cars flowing into groups of peaceful protesters to mass shootings, our problem with violence is growing. And it will continue to grow until we face it for what it is: a character defect that’s been part of the American psyche from the beginning.

The draconian treatment of #RealityWinner is repeated daily in the lives of hundreds of thousands, perhaps millions of people. Institutional cruelty within our criminal justice and prison systems is in direct contradiction to everything we are meant to be. thedissenter.org/mother-of-nsa-…
The senator wants a constitutional amendment to ban flag burning. I’d rather see a constitutional amendment banning money in politics and establishing public funding for all federal campaigns. thehill.com/homenews/senat…

Regarding suspected crimes of Trump’s AG Bill Barr, It’s good to remember Nixon’s AG John Mitchell served 19 months in prison for his role in the Watergate scandal - and so did a few other Nixon aides. Justice must be committed to and pursued now too. #TrumpGate
Knowing what happened in the past helps us better respond to the present. Government secretiveness - particularly military secretiveness - is a big step on the way to autocracy, and there’s a direct line from Daniel Ellsberg to Julian Assange. twitter.com/chipgibbons89/…
In a country where we have almost limitless choices in clothing, electronic equipment, food and so much else, it makes no sense that we have such limited choices when it comes to politics. We need to end our codependent relationship with a system that has failed us. That’s Step 1
4/ G. Washington warned us against political parties. He said they’d form “factions of men” more concerned with their party then with their country. In any other area the utter failure of our 2 party duopoly to “secure the blessings of our liberty” would be seen for what it is.
3/ That America’s military is a perpetual war machine is an indictment of both political parties. That 35 million Americans are hungry is an indictment of both political parties. That corporations govern our government is an indictment of both political parties. The list goes on.
2/ That mass shootings have become a common occurrence in America is an indictment of both political parties. That income inequality is a core facet of our economy is an indictment both political parties. That our food and water are so toxic is an indictment of both parties.
1/ That over half a million people are homeless in America is an indictment of both political parties. That tens of million are medically uninsured or underinsured is an indictment of both parties. That 43 million Americans owe college loan debt is an indictment of both parties.
