The @museumofBible exhibit lets the churches of #Karabakh speak, telling the story of centuries of worship and spiritual devotion. These are living traditions that should not be destroyed today.
#Karabakh was long a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural region. Armenian presence there goes back to antiquity, rigorously documented through ancient inscriptions, manuscripts, historical records, architecture & linguistics. That culture should not be erased as a casualty of war.
Scholars and international organizations have voiced their urgent concern, calling for the preservation of Armenian Christian heritage in #Karabakh. @UNESCO has been waiting for Azerbaijan's permission to visit the sites since December 2020.…
Thousands of Armenian churches and religious monuments have been demolished in the Nakhichevan region of Azerbaijan. Satellite images from @aaas captured the destruction, which they said was the result of heavy machinery razing those sites to the ground.…
I've covered heritage destruction in armed conflict for years. But as a faithful and practicing member of the Armenian Church, this story hits close to home. The 2020 #Karabakh war has put many churches and monuments at risk of destruction or cultural erasure.
The @museumofBible just launched a landmark exhibit on the churches and sacred monuments of Nagorno-#Karabakh, highlighting Armenian Christian heritage at risk of disappearing from that region.…
According to @JaredGenser, who is representing him, Felix Maradiaga, the Nicaraguan democracy activist, has been beaten, arrested, and "disappeared." I wrote about him and others two years ago. Felix is a marvelous and brave human being.…

It's been six days since Felix @maradiaga has been seen alive. Nicaragua is breaking its own laws by failing to produce proof of life. #SOSNicaragua #EstamosConVosFelix #LibertadParaLosPresosPoliticos

Felix has a profound commitment to democracy. He was running for president. The current leader of Nicaragua, seeking his fifth term, decided to arrest Felix and others running against him.…
One of the great honors and joys of my life has been belonging to the World Economic Forum's community of Young Global Leaders (@YGLvoices). And one of our finest, Felix @maradiaga, has just been detained unjustly and unlawfully in Nicaragua.
Fun anthropological tidbit: Alice's father was a Lokman Hekim, a homeopathic traditional medicine man. They were common throughout Anatolia before the arrival fo Western medicine. My geeky dream project would be to learn all about them.…
There are also incredible scholars, writers, humanitarians and everyday people in Turkey who are ready to reconcile. Whatever they call the events of 1915, they know it tore apart the diverse indigenous fabric of Anatolia.
Unfortunately, recent years in Turkey have seen the reemergence of terms like "Leftovers of the Sword," an insult hurled at people like me, whose ancestors survived the Genocide. By that thinking, I myself am a Leftover -- an accident, the sword shouldn't have spared. But...
On a personal level, I do pray and reflect on the life of my great-grandmother, Alice Balian of Dortyol, who survived the Genocide, and her mother, Marie-Knarig, who died on the death march into the Syrian desert. May I live a life that would make them proud.
It's my sincere hope, both as an Armenian-American and as a human being, that marking and memorializing the #ArmenianGenocide will foster reconciliation between Turks and Armenians. Many people on both sides need to heal.
I spoke with @calev_i24 about the #ArmenianGenocide and its geopolitical dimensions. This is an important moment for recognizing history and resetting the course of our region. @i24NEWS_EN…
My final thought for the day/year is from the beloved Rumi, a reminder that we are all in this together. What one heart can do for another heart, is there any beauty in the world that can match this? Brotherhood, sisterhood, humanity becomes the joy and the emancipation.

At the start of each #NewYear I send my close friends and colleagues a long email message with bits of wisdom that have helped me over the past twelve months. Tweeting a selection of them here in case they'll be helpful to you for 2021.
We will have to do better, as a species, for life to get much better in the #NewYear. After the solidarity of suffering we saw in 2020, I hope that more of us will bond together and work together in 2021. Let's reverse the trends we can no longer afford. #2021MakeAWish
Structural injustice and inequality make it all worse. We cannot recover as individuals or bounce back as a society if access to healthcare, housing and basic resources remain such a struggle for so many. The corona economy knocked too many people off their feet.
Some of the hardest things in 2020 were the lived impact of clear trend lines (more wildfires, natural disasters), the cause-and-effect of corruption (#BeirutBlast) or the result of negligent policy and poor preparedness (pandemic response).
I know we're all wishing for a happier and more peaceful year for the world in 2021. Some things, I hope, will get instantly better in 2021. But other things, unfortunately, will not. #2021MakeAWish
I certainly hadn't known those #Azeri stories or realized they were missing from my mental timeline until I started covering this round of war. I have work to do and this whole region has a lot of work to do in grasping the real, honest, human experience of the other side.
There are Armenians who remember fondly having Azeri neighbors here in #Armenia proper. But it's very fair to say that Armenians did not fully understand or empathize with the pain of many Azeris who lost their homes (or more) in the rounds of fighting and displacement.
Very timely from the @CrisisGroup. Let 2021 see real progress made. It'll be difficult and long, but a lot can be achieved even in the near future if there's political will. Improving Prospects for Peace after the Nagorno-Karabakh War… #Armenia #Azerbaijan

Dr. @shafiyev_farid, respectfully, I'm always more than happy to speak with you, listen carefully to you & integrate your perspectives. You didn't actually accept my invitation to do that back on Oct 3. As a correction, I don't work for FP but I do occasionally write for them.
Thank you for all the thoughtful responses to my mega-thread on #Armenia, #Turkey and #Azerbaijan. You raised a lot of questions that I don't take lightly. There's a lot of work to do in filling out the answers.

I will always, always be committed to the good of this region the people in it. Journalists, or at least the ones I admire, are also humanitarians. A life of journalism + social impact projects on the ground here in Armenia is a worthwhile one to me.
I welcome constructive thoughts and @ messages from anyone of any culture. But I will ignore hate and block trolls. And I’ll do my best to engage in calm conversations; I haven’t had time to do that lately on this platform.
This is the first time in my life I've been tasked with reporting or analysis of an issue that hits close to home. I will do my best with it, reporting with clarity and honesty, or conveying opinion when asked to editorialize. Twitter always seems to be a mix of both.
