No line of sight, no words of encouragement from above, no “are you okay down there,” no acknowledgment at all that I was climbing something with serious exposure without a rope. 2/
Side-thread: We went up another “scramble” in Snowdonia with a chimney that was really a 5th class climb. B went up first, then just disappeared. I was a climber then and I got myself up it but the adrenaline was coursinf. 1/
I think I’ll make this a thread. Here’s installment no. 2 of “photos I randomly come across in my collection that I think y’all will like”. Hiking Mount Snowdon in North Wales via the Crib Goch knife-edge.
Seen at Hemlock Ravine near the creek with @DrRob_Thacker: a bark-free snag (dead tree) with this beautiful black surface pattern. Does anyone know the biology of this? @FungiwithBengi @AwesomeBiota @StephenBHeard

Sometimes the pandemic reminds me of… “As you know, the concept of the suction pump is centuries old. Well, really, that's all this is. Except that instead of sucking water, I'm sucking life. I've just sucked one year of your life away.”
It's time to check in on South Dakota, which has seen a 200% increase in Covid-19 cases in the past two weeks — the highest growth rate in the nation. What happened two weeks ago? The Sturgis motorcycle rally. Quick thread on the data:

Random photo-blast from the past: This is Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, one of the oldest pubs in England, in the village of St. Albans (formerly Roman Verulamium) where we lived 2004-6. It might as well be the Prancing Pony. I always half expected to find Aragorn in a dark corner.
