It’s time to go #OutToLunch. I take the marvellous actor and writer Sheila Hancock to the equally marvellous Bubala. We talk about meeting Tennessee Williams, talent spotting Daniel Day Lewis and watching naked attraction with @GylesB1 podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/out…
At the point for some reason, I concluded it would be better if I got the line out casually rather than let Gervaise do it and milk it for laughs. This made a weird kind of sense to me at the time. It didn’t work out that way. There were complaints ends/
But I loved this story of the inadvertently hilarious script line and I told loads of people about it. Including on the night Ricky Gervaise who was the One Show sofa guest. I told him the line in the script had been changed. ‘great,’ he said. ‘I’ll do it after.’ 3/
When the voice over script came through it included the line ‘and so Nigella Lawson beats off the hairy bikers.’ I told the young producer we had to change the line. Why? He said. I explained. It was changed 2/
Well this seems to be doing the rounds again and who am I to stamp on the fun? But there is background which I’ll explain (again). We were talking off the back of a vt about a fantasy football league of sleb chefs’ Xmas recipes, judged by a viewers panel. 1/ twitter.com/clark1995clark…
Oh, if that's the case, then you could start by removing yourself from Downing Street. #StatementOfBloodyObvious twitter.com/paulwaugh/stat…
This afternoon @DublinAirport was letting passengers, a surging thousand-strong snake of people, through into security just one person at a time. Took 55 mins to go through. And apparently that’s not too bad. Be warned. Leave plenty of time when travelling from Dublin.
A huge thank you to everyone involved for @Writingandideas in Borris, Ireland. A great time was had. Thank you for the brilliantly run events, the hospitality and the white grand piano. (The only slight down note is the spectacular understaffing @DublinAirport security. Oh my.)
If sound check is anything to go by …you won’t want to miss JR QUARTET - HALF OF THEM (LIVE): Restaurant critic and pig-lover @jayrayner1 (piano) and jazz-vocalist @PatGordonSmith for a very special Sunday set in the Festival Club Marquee. #festivalofwritingandideas2022

A while back I very publicly retired the word 'punchy' from my reviews, due to blatant overuse. Now a reader, possibly with too much time on their hands, has created The Jay Rayner Food Writing Assistant 0-Matic. rayner-assistant-o-matic.herokuapp.com
This week’s review: Ka Pao, Edinburgh. Very much a case of really nice southeast Asian food; shame about the location. theguardian.com/food/2022/jun/…
On the wall in a discreet corner of Dublin’s @MerrionHotel is this, a signed record of the Belfast Agreement. There were clearly a number like this, each a record of the hugely diverse group who signed up. This is what the bottom feeders in downing street are putting at risk.
I’ll be performing @Writingandideas #Borris both tomorrow and Sunday. As Roisin says it’s a fab line up. twitter.com/roisiningle/st…
Starting my weekend in Ireland the right way.
Huge congratulations to @Freedland on publication of The Escape Artist, an astonishing account of one man’s role in shining light on the one of the worlds darkest episodes. Both brilliant writing and an important work of historical document.
Glorious people of Somerset: the Kitchen Cabinet is recording @QueensTaunton on June 15. Come and be in the audience. We need your joy, laughter, applause, questions and hormonal excitement. Apply for Tickets here: bbc.co.uk/showsandtours/…
All my #OutToLunch guests are wonderful company, but today’s is especially brilliant. Over lunch @bao_london the terrific @ItsBigZuu talks to me about diversity on TV, learning to cook for his mum when he was a kid, and his hatred for mushrooms. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/out…
A bit of history is always useful. twitter.com/ShippersUnboun…
So he limps on until… ooh two massive by-election defeats on June 23rd.
Normally at this point in the evening I’d be watching another episode in the new series of Borgen. I don’t think I’ll bother tonight.
Gawd, those long nights alone in Glasgow, really have blunted his judgement haven't they. twitter.com/michaelgove/st…
I wrote a little hymn of praise to the joys of eating fish and chips by the sea. (FWIW, the listings are not written by me. Only the intro.) theguardian.com/travel/2022/ju…
For all my live shows, both jazz and last suppers including autumn gigs in #Norwich #Derby #Horsham and #SaffronWalden go here. jayrayner.co.uk/live-shows/

All the pics from my dinner @blacksaltsheen are now up on Instagram where I am also @jayrayner1. But have a few here: the Guinea fowl and duck seekh kebabs, the soft shell crab and the deep, dark pig cheek vindaloo.
This week’s review: duck and Guinea fowl seekh kebabs, whole soft shell crab and pork cheek vindaloo @blacksaltsheen. theguardian.com/food/2022/jun/…
Right. We’ve established which of my pieces was considered good enough to be an A level set text. But I must say this. I got a C at English A level. If you’re one of those sitting exams right now, do your best. But don’t for a moment think the results will define you. They won’t.
For your reading pleasure @stuheritage is live blogging the platinum concert (by Ronco). It’s quite clear from his posts so far that Stuart doesn’t think he’ll be nominated for an honour any time soon. Do keep the poor fekker company. theguardian.com/music/live/202…
Just been told one of my pieces turned up in the English Lang A level. Anybody know what the piece was because this is the first I’ve heard of it?
Come on it. The sweetcorn veloute is lovely. twitter.com/PeatLong/statu…
Has 2022 made you question your mortality? Then I've got the show for you. Come and see My Last Supper, @CrazyCoqs, London June 23. Let's explore our final meal options together. brasseriezedel.com/events/my-last…
The Kitchen Cabinet is back on the road for good, and we need audiences. Delighted say I'll be coming back to @QueensTaunton and I'll be bringing my mates. Apply for tickets below. twitter.com/bbcshowstours/…
Let’s go #OutToLunch. I take fab standup and actress @sindhuvfunny to Louie London for great Creole seafood. We talk about getting her comic inspiration from her late mother, being a failed PHD candidate (her mother’s words) and dying on stage in Delhi. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/out…
Oh god, Norman Wisdom. It’s an A to B of 1970s British talent.
The Young generation are now dancing to, I think, Blake’s 7 theme.
Right. So obviously the only place to go now is Ken Dodd and tears. It’s one long advert for terrible 1970s dentistry.
There’s a musical extravaganza from 1976 being screened on BBC4 right now with Val Doonian, Lulu, Max Byrgraves and good god, is that Vera Lynn? It’s like an extended version of those clips tweeted by @RealMattLucas. And not necessarily in a good way.
For all live show links, including last supper dates in the autumn in #Norwich #Derby #Horsham and #SaffronWalden go here jayrayner.co.uk/live-shows/
And on August 26, the Jr Sextet are @pizzajazzclub Soho. Looks like the early is sold out but the late has space pizzaexpresslive.com/whats-on/jazz-…
