It does feel very much like the Taliban has hired a very good PR person, no? twitter.com/Reuters/status…
But they might also be open to cutting investment deals with American adversaries, based on different sorts of conditions.
Economically it would make sense for them to turn to tax collection instead. The question then is, will the Taliban be better at tax collecting than the preceding govt? Possibly.
The Taliban obviously financed itself through opium sales, but these still needed a "plugged into the intl money system" conduit to be usefully monetised. With physical dollars no longer incoming into the country, and no plugged in cbank, monetising opium will be much harder.
Of course the question remains: will the Taliban be able to self-finance themselves regardless? The answer to that is complicated.
New thread from the frmr Afghan Central Bank gov explaining the reserve situation that the Taliban inherits. In short, it's all subject to sanctions since there's very little hard currency or assets in situ. This does give the intl community some leverage twitter.com/aahmady/status…
This thread is to clarify the location of DAB (Central Bank of Afghanistan) international reserves I am writing this because I have been told Taliban are asking DAB staff about location of assets If this is true - it is clear they urgently need to add an economist on their team

I thought that Beijing's handling of Ant Group's IPO would be a wake-up call for foreign investors. But it wasn't. So what about China's latest measures. (Pls share to get a good sample) Is China's equity market now un-investible?

Obesity is correlated with poverty. And that’s partly due to the fact that healthy food is expensive. So just move broadly to subsidize healthy food.
Why do you need to track people? Why not just subsidize healthy food and gyms? Everything else is walking us to a social credit system. google.co.uk/amp/s/www.thes…

I mean obviously one of the reasons I like it is because I've kind of made this point all along about blockchain and fintech in general. As everyone knows, I love a good financial paradox.
Finally caught up on @nic__carter 's and Linda Jeng's fascinating piece on the paradox of DeFi. I think the conclusion is especially insightful. Particularly these bits: papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cf…
