21. Use the immense powers that you have for good causes. Continue to support INEC to conduct free, fair, credible, & inclusive elections. We are not asking for blind support. We are always open to constructive but not destructive criticisms. Thank you for your attention @rot1930
22. Malcolm X once said, and I quote: “The media’s the most powerful entity on earth. They have the power to make the innocent guilty and to make the guilty innocent.” This is both a positive and negative statement. @rot1930
21. Our country will face many dangers if journalists fail in their responsibilities. The media is the only hope of the ordinary person. The media speaks truth to power, and your ability to hold public office holders to account is such a unique one. @rot1930
20. However, as much as we can, let us try in our individual and collective capacities to work for the preservation of our democracy and the improvement of the electoral process. We have no other country except Nigeria. @rot1930
19. Ladies and gentlemen, I want to make an appeal as one of you. Before I assumed my current role, I was in the mainstream media. So I know the powers that you have. I also appreciate the challenges. Things are pretty tricky, and we are operating under challenging circumstances.
18. You can also find the INEC Regulations and Guidelines on our website – inecnigeria.org – which explains all the processes that we follow when we conduct elections and much more. @rot1930
17. In addition, you will appreciate the regulatory powers given to the Commission to manage the electoral system. @rot1930
16. Then find time out of your busy schedules to read the documents. If you do this, you will understand why INEC acts the way it does because these laws guide all our actions. @rot1930
15. As media professionals covering politics and electoral matters, I would suggest that you get a personal copy of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended and the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended). @rot1930
14. There is another thing. Many media practitioners tend to question some of our actions. Each time we provide answers, we quote the relevant sections of the law. @rot1930
13. If you haven’t done so, please follow us on our social media handles, and you will be glad you did. You will find a lot of helpful information in real-time that you can use to prepare your reports from time to time. @rot1930
12. Apart from our regular press statements, we also have social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. We upload a great deal of content and documents to these platforms. We also have an online newspaper – INECNEWS.Com and MyINEC App. @rot1930
11. I wish to draw the attention of all participants to the various channels that the Commission has established, which could serve as good sources of news. They can also be used for research purposes. @rot1930
10. However, we also expect feedback from participants regarding comments and questions for which robust clarifications will be provided. I am sure the Head of Station at Hot FM will speak along this line during her presentation. @rot1930
9. During this meeting, our National Commissioner, Barrister Festus Okoye, Resident Electoral Commissioner, Alhaji Yahaya Bello and Director of ICT, Engineer Chidi Nwafor, will speak on these critical areas. @rot1930
8. The second reason is that Commission has new information regarding the upcoming elections that we would like the FCT citizens to know. @rot1930
7. We will be holding quarterly consultative meetings with our critical stakeholders this week, beginning from tomorrow, and the media is one of these vital partners. @rot1930
6. We thank you for what you have done in the past, what you are doing now and what you intend to do in the future. We will continue to accord the media the respect that it deserves. @rot1930
5. Consequently, we are also able to respond more proactively to their needs. The Commission profoundly appreciates this continuous collaboration and would never take it for granted. @rot1930
4. Indeed, you are willing to do so because you have found us very receptive to your enquiries and respectful of your roles. The cumulative effects have been unquantifiable. Nigerians now get to hear about our activities and interact with us regularly. @rot1930
3. When INEC speaks, acts, issues press statements, reacts to false allegations or debunks conspiracy theories, and Nigerians get to hear about it, it is because you, media professionals, have reported on it through your respective channels. @rot1930
2. This meeting is essential for two reasons: First, it reiterates the Commission’s deep respect for the media as a critical and indispensable partner in the electoral process. This is more or less a tradition, and it has been beneficial to INEC in many ways. @rot1930
1. As you are all aware, the FCT Area Council Elections will hold on Saturday 12th Feb. 2022. Although INEC regards every election as important, this election is particularly unique because the FCT is the only entity in Nigeria where INEC conducts local council elections @rot1930
