It's a really guttural feeling performing the end section of Oceans Burning live. It feels like talking directly to a totally different person from in the first half. Advice you didn't listen to #timstwitterlisteningparty
I never met her so the image I have in my head will be some mixture of a real family photo, an actress from the 1920s or part of some postcard I saw at a flea market. But then you can still tap into some weird emotion with those mental pictures #timstwitterlisteningparty
Oceans Burning
Going back to picturing an image that kind of informs the lyrics - when I wrote these I was imagining coming across a photo of my grandmother when she was young, standing hanging out the washing in an overgrown garden #timstwitterlisteningparty
Not sure the full extent of Josh’s madness can ever be revealed but there’s plenty of it in this one.
He built a guitar synth and that’s what he’s playing through #timstwitterlisteningparty
On our last day at the Cornwall house - as we were loading the gear out -the roof caved in.
It had rained heavily the last two nights. The entire entrance hall ceiling came down. I’d spilled quite a lot of wax on the carpet so maybe it was for the best #timstwitterlisteningparty
On one of our rare trips to the living room we managed to get this one together.
The lyrics are supposed to feel euphoric at 1st but it’s kind of about the opposite - about the feeling you get when distance grows between you and the people close to you #timstwitterlisteningparty
We had a party. I got chased by a herd of cows but didn’t panic bc for some reason believed that a stampede will just travel carefully around you, & you won’t be trampled.
I casually climbed barbed wire fence just as I felt the breath from closest cow #timstwitterlisteningparty
We set up our gear in living room w ultimate precision before each retreating to a separate corner of the house. I got really into building sculptures from melted candles, so that took up a lot of time. Village of Damned was playing on repeat on the TV #timstwitterlisteningparty
So after a few weeks writing at the Gun Factory it felt as if that period had run its course. Rhys & Joe had been listening to Exile on Main Street and thought the Horrors decamping to Cornwall for a few weeks was a good idea. In theory it was #timstwitterlisteningparty
I tend to wanna cut certain types of songs short but Tom and Rhys really liked the extended outro with the horns and I admit I think they were right #timstwitterlisteningparty
Quickly going back to Still Life - it did sort of inform the sound of the whole record. We often do this - wait to hit on something that kind of points the way #timstwitterlisteningparty
WILD EYED
Vocal was recorded in my house just with a handheld mic - we tried to redo it in studio but the home one felt more relaxed and intimate. You can hear my phone going off in the background halfway through the verse
#timstwitterlisteningparty
But this was very quick. Written about my Grandfather in a coma - the idea that certain experiences make you feel like you’re living in a different world to all the people around you.
Written from a dissociated perspective, like you feel powerless #timstwitterlisteningparty
Still Life was the first song we wrote for this record, on the first day of writing, done in a day pretty much.
I hate when people say “I wrote this song in four hours!” Like it’s a measure of quality #timstwitterlisteningparty
A little aside here - the studio on Shacklewell Lane was down the road from Josh’s house.
Here’s a photo of him, captured on Google Earth, waiting for the bus to ride all of two stops.
How the other half live eh
#timstwitterlisteningparty
Dive In was one of the earlier songs written in Gun Factory. People always ask about the meaning of the words but to me they're clear. Are they? #timstwitterlisteningparty
It's about the idea that you can’t really capture a memory - just the broad strokes or the feelings that come with it. But maybe it's about something else to YOU #timstwitterlisteningparty
This was the first Skying song we played live. The break allows the more active among us to rest and play with Josh's oscillator #timstwitterlisteningparty
