The pandemic created the conditions to answer a big question in abortion care -- can people take the abortion pills entirely via telemedicine, with the pills mailed to them at home? Research shows high efficacy and safety. @DrDGrossman nytimes.com/2021/08/19/bri…

This would also mean the next nearest clinic for all Mississippi women would be in states that are also hostile to abortion care: 52% would find their nearest clinic in Louisiana 29% in Tennessee 17% in Alabama 1% in Arkansas #AbortionAccess
New: If abortion were banned in #Mississippi, the avg driving distance for a woman aged 15-44 to reach an abortion clinic would increase 42%—from 78 miles to 111 miles each way. The greater the increase in distance, the greater the hardship it causes. guttmacher.org/article/2021/0…
While Texans were preparing for the devastating impact of SB8, the Fifth Circuit Court delivered another huge blow to abortion care in the state: a ban on the most common, safe abortion procedure. Beyond its exceptionally safe and effective track record, what makes #MedicationAbortion so significant is how convenient and private it can be—and how radically it could expand access to abortion care if freed from politically motivated restrictions. guttmacher.org/article/2020/0…

Texas has a long history of trying to shut down abortion care by implementing a variety of restrictions, and has been one of the states considered hostile to abortion for many years. For more on Texas' long legacy of harm, check out 👇#AbortionAccesssguttmacher.org/article/2021/0…y

Terrible news from the 5th Circuit yesterday. This is devastating for Texans who need second trimester abortions—and for the providers who have to choose between going against their own medical judgement or denying folks care altogether. texastribune.org/2021/08/18/tex… via @TexasTribune

Our new analysis estimates that 6.3%-7.4% of all US abortions are obtained at or after 15 weeks of pregnancy—which is about 54,000-63,000 abortions a year. Abortion at & after 15 weeks remains necessary & important across the country, including in Texas. guttmacher.org/article/2021/0…

Like all abortion restrictions, this would most impact Texans with the fewest resources. Someone making minimum wage in the state ($7.25/hr) would have to use a full day’s earnings just to pay for the additional gas for each longer round trip. #StopTheBans #AbortionIsHealthCare
This is deeply disturbing: If abortion care were not available in #Texas, people would have to travel 20 times farther to reach a provider. #SB8 guttmacher.org/article/2021/0…
Incarcerated people have a right to abortion, but cost is a critical barrier to care. Due to the #HydeAmendment & #Medicaid restrictions, people in custody must often pay for abortion, even though their health care is the responsibility of the institution. guttmacher.org/article/2021/0…
Ending the Helms Amendment would be a critical step toward ensuring that people around the world have access to the essential sexual & reproductive health care they need. #EndHelms guttmacher.org/article/2021/0… twitter.com/MsMagazine/sta…
These additional costs could easily become major barriers to abortion for people trying to make ends meet. Adding insult to injury, #SB8 would allow anyone to sue an abortion provider or others who help a patient get care—including by providing financial help or transportation.
🚗For anyone traveling to a state requiring multiple trips to an abortion provider, the financial burden is even higher. Beyond the cost of gas, they may also have to factor in lodging, child care, lost wages & other logistical expenses—in addition to the cost of abortion care.
🚙To begin with, putting > 3.5 hours’ worth of earnings toward gas to cover the additional 1-way travel cost (for a car that gets 25 miles/gallon, w/ gas prices around $2.80/gallon). That means using a full day’s earnings to pay for the additional gas needed for each round trip!
🚘 Texas’ 6-week abortion ban would force many people to travel dramatically longer distances for care. What does this mean for someone making minimum wage? #SB8Bguttmacher.org/article/2021/0…vvI

Incarcerated people have a constitutional right to abortion. Still only 1/2 of study prisons allowed abortion in the 1st & 2nd trimester & 14% didn't allow abortion at all. 67% of study jails allowed abortion. More work is needed to ensure #AbortionAccess for incarcerated people.
