Recently, in UP, a 15-year-old Muslim kid Dilshad was allegedly beaten to death by teachers at school. Not only has no FIR been registered yet, there has been no outrage or media coverage either. Also, the RW rag reported only the police version; for obvious reasons.

Nehru inherited a country, rife with differences, full of poverty, violence, divided by much more than it was united by. He made that nation think about modern democracy, modern institutions, dams, and much more. His was a voice which commanded awe in the global community.

15 Aug. 75 years. It’s hard not to appreciate the vision & audacity of India’s founding fathers, of Nehru, Gandhi, Tagore & others. There are few parallels in the world of a poor nation embracing democracy, secularism, freedom of speech & a global outlook the way India did.

1. The real intent of PM to mark Aug 14 as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day is to use the most traumatic historical events as fodder for his current political battles. Lakhs upon lakhs were dislocated and lost their lives. Their sacrifices must not be forgotten or disrespected.

Salman Rushdie did not insult anybody. A great many reactionaries worked extremely hard to feel insulted. And for three decades their murderous rage was rationalised and justified by an embarrassingly large number of literary and political luminaries.
