5 observations from Suns' Game 1 win and misleading finish vs. Mavericks - via @PHNX_Suns
On today's @PHNX_Suns podcast, we talked Game 1, had a snake draft for overrated movies, and I got heated about the sports entertainment industry's obsession with hot takes. Listen/subscribe:
Cam Johnson finished 3rd in Sixth Man of the Year voting:
Well deserved Sixth Man of the Year award for Tyler Herro. Pretty cool to see Cam Johnson be a finalist
Nobody new on the Suns’ injury report for Game 2 tomorrow

Jae Crowder on the response to his website selling the “F*** Jae Crowder” shirts: “People are going crazy with it right now. I’ve ran out of shirts to give.”
“I think that funky feeling that we had at the end could generate a bit of ‘let’s get back out there.’” Asked Monty Williams about whether the Suns’ poor close to Game 1 is the type of annoyance this group will take with them heading into Game 2:
Hope y'all enjoy this season finale of Winning Time, because Sunday is about to be the extent of it for a while…
On how the Suns defended Luka Doncic in Game 1, the Mavs having no answer for Deandre Ayton and why that ugly 4th quarter was an anomaly of missed shots:
Were Luka or DBook worse for wear after Game 1? @GeraldBourguet shares his thoughts on their physical health going into Game 2. 🎧

It's cool to have differing opinions. It's cool if you think the Mavs will be better in G2. But in a game the Suns led wire to wire and were up by 21 in the 4th, this is not real analysis. Normally I don't give this type of thing attention, but the willful ignorance is shameful…
We’re really living out the prequel to the “blessed be the fruit” times. Disgusting
From the Suns' fluky 4th quarter that's not worth worrying about to the Mavs having no answer for Deandre Ayton, there was a lot to absorb in Game 1. For @PHNX_Suns, I went through the biggest observations:
Ayton said the Suns are going to come off this game like they got the L and that they won't close a game like that again. Mentioned they have to "break the gas pedal," not just press it
Deandre Ayton on the Suns' 4th quarter: "We didn't finish the way we wanted to, and it was an emotional type of energy out there. It got quiet, because we know we can do better."
Chris Paul on the Game 1 win: "We'll take the win. It's not always gonna be pretty. We played well, pretty much most of the game. We'll look at the film tomorrow and see what we need to do different in Game 2."
Monty Williams said dialing back Chris Paul's minutes was not a part of the plan, but he sat him longer than usual because Cam Payne was playing well and it helps keep him fresh for the 4th quarter. Mentioned CP3 having a few choice words for him when he subbed him out in the 3Q
Monty Williams on the Suns' 4th quarter struggles: "I just thought we missed a lot of shots vs. their switching. We had an advantage with our bigs, especially with JaVale, and I though we made a few bad reads."
The Suns are now 51-0 when leading after 3 quarters (4-0 in the postseason)
The Suns shot at least 50% on FG in their 7th straight playoff game. That's tied with the 1986 Lakers for the 2nd-longest streak in a postseason during the shot-clock era. They trail only the 1984 Lakers, who did this in 10 straight games.

Not the strongest close, but the Suns won't play like that in the 4th quarter of a tight game. Pretty dominant showing other than those last few minutes when the game was all but decided
Final: PHX 121, DAL 114 Ayton: 25 Pts, 8 Reb, 12-20 FG Booker: 23-9-8, 7-20 FG Paul: 19 Pts, 5 Reb, 7-13 FG Cam Johnson: 17 Pts, 5 Reb, 6-10 FG Doncic: 45-12-8, 15-30 FG
"Suns in 4" chant breaks out
Suns' inability to hit a single wide open shot over the last 5 minutes is gonna make this final margin of victory a lot closer than it probably should've been
Chris Paul fouls out Reggie Bullock and puts Phoenix in the bonus. These are the Suns' first FTs since the first quarter, I think?
Lmao Chris Paul. After the Suns missed several quality, wide open shots, CP3 hits *that* ridiculous bank shot to put Phoenix up 13 with 3:18 to go
Suns are like one or two shots away from putting this game away but they're not hitting. Mavs back within 13
JaVale McGee just turned Luka Doncic into a living Call An Ambulance But Not For Me meme:
JaVale McGee with the steal on Luka Doncic. Fast break dunk. Pandemonium at the Foot
Cam Johnson playing like this is a killer. Like...what are you supposed to do?
The challenge is unsuccessful, Bridges picks up his 4th foul. Woof that's an awful call
Mikal Bridges gets whistled for virtually no contact against Luka Doncic. That would be his fourth foul, Monty's challenging it. I'd be surprised if this isn't overturned
Luka Doncic came up hobbled on that last play. Limping back down on the court and holding his left leg
Oh dear God. I have no idea how Maxi Kleber got up trhat fast from that fall. One of the scariest landings I've seen in a long, long time
End of 3Q: PHX 96, DAL 79 Ayton: 25 Pts, 5 Reb, 12-16 FG Booker: 19-8-7, 7-17 FG Cam Johnson: 13 Pts, 5 Reb, 4-7 FG Doncic: 32 Pts, 10 Reb, 6 Ast, 10-25 FG
JaVale McGee checks in for DA with the Suns up 18
That ball movement against the Mavs'
Cam Johnson hits a 3 out of Dallas' miscommunication on D after trying to double Devin Booker, and the Suns are up 15 again. Wear-down effect may be kicking in here soon
*trying It's determined it's a common foul
Jae Crowder picks up his 4th foul truing to stop a fast break after a turnover. Officials will review to see if it was a clear-path foul
The Mavericks have absolutely no answer for Deandre Ayton. He's up to 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting and there's still 7 minutes left in the 3rd quarter. Playoff career highs gotta be inbound in this series
Devin Booker looked at Luka Doncic like 3 times on that play just to make sure the message was received
C&C Music Factory playing “Gonna Make You Sweat” at halftime of Game 1 brings me back to my days listening to Jock Jams, and I very much appreciate it
Mavs shot 9-for-21 from 3 (42.9%) but only got 14 points out of everyone not named Doncic or Kleber. Suns shot just under 64% overall
Halftime: PHX 69, DAL 56 Booker: 15-6-5, 5-9 FG Ayton: 19 Pts, 9-12 FG Crowder: 11 Pts, 4-5 FG Doncic: 26-6-4, 8-18 FG
