We just showed our kids the intro to Ulysses 31, and I’m here to remind you that *that* is how you do a theme song. youtu.be/N50XnT9206w
For music stuff, sometime you just want to share a shot of the studio, or an EP cover, or a flyer, or anything. You can put it on Twitter, sure, but it’s not photo-first, and the dedicated “photography” apps don’t currently feel like the right place.
So, is anyone working on an alternative to Instagram? I don’t mean some of the very impressive, but pro-level photo-sharing apps like Glass, but more just the “hey, this is just an image and it’s not necessarily a work of art, but I just want to share it” kind of thing.
Like many others my thoughts are with the many people laid off yesterday at @Shopify. To help, my good friend and fellow Shopify alum @keirwhitaker has created weworkedatshop.com. If you’re impacted please submit your profile and if not please share far and wide. Thanks! twitter.com/keirwhitaker/s…

What are all you cool kids using to make moodboards these days?
M2 Air “out for delivery” today! 😱
Paging all CSS email friends! I’ve got two issues with my newsletter: 1. Apple Mail (Mac) seems to ignore my `@Media (prefers-color-scheme: dark)` rules. 2. Font fallbacks are fine, but one reader has found that headings are showing tofu. PLZ HALP
Against my better judgement, it looks like another issue of my typography newsletter is happening today. Sign up here to get it in your inbox in the not-too-distant future: buttondown.email/elliotjaystocks
[7/7] I’ve published a more detailed version of this thread as a blog post on my personal site. elliotjaystocks.com/blog/google-fo…
[6/7] And, in the spirit of improving our existing content, “legibility” and “readability” have been split into two separate entries, and have been completely rewritten. fonts.google.com/knowledge/glos…
[5/7] Plus we have a load of new and mainly icon-related terms in our glossary. fonts.google.com/knowledge/glos…
[4/7] And it’s not just new modules! I wrote a guide to installing and managing fonts. This is a subject I’ve always been into, but dug deep since switching to @typefaceapp for font management and filling my library with multiple variable fonts. fonts.google.com/knowledge/usin…
[3/7] The second new module is on type history. The first three articles for this were written by @ThomasJockin and @micahbrich. fonts.google.com/knowledge/hist…
[2/7] We’re launching 2 new modules! The first is on using type in AR & VR, written by @Niteesh22. fonts.google.com/knowledge/usin…
[1/7] Today marks @googlefonts Knowledge’s 2nd content drop of 2022, and I figured it was worth a quick thread to cover all the newness. fonts.google.com/knowledge
The most excited I’ve been about a new Mac in quite some time.
“What makes 2022 a lot worse than 1976 is not just the temperature itself [...] but how large an area is currently feeling the heat. [...] 40C heat was predicted for the UK of the 2050s, not the 2020s.” theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
Guys, I think I’ve solved it. Hear me out... We make any day the temperature goes above 32C in the UK an automatic bank holiday And then watch the big corporations scramble to fix climate change ASAP

Really looking forward to the first @LetterLuvvers in #bristol on Wednesday! @JamieClarkeType and I will be taxi-ing it up there for 6:30 sharp! Who’s coming? eventbrite.co.uk/e/letter-luvve…
Happy hot Monday! About an hour left to go on @iammrcup’s latest beautiful Kickstarter project: kickstarter.com/projects/mrcup…
I’d also like to add that @buttondown is an absolute joy to use. Hats off, @jmduke!
Right, that’s it. It’s out there, in the wild. The world does not need yet another newsletter. And, on a Friday afternoon, you probably don’t either. But sometimes you’ve just got to hit “send”, you know? (If you subscribed, thanks! I hope you enjoy it.)
I’m finally going to be sending out my first typography newsletter this afternoon. If you haven’t subscribed, now would be a good time! And don’t forget to confirm your address — about 10% of subscribers haven’t confirmed, and they won’t get any emails. buttondown.email/elliotjaystocks
I recently had the pleasure of creating a mix for the Metropolitan podcast in Medellín, Colombia. The mix went live yesterday and in it, you’ll find an hour of my recent techno favourites. Enjoy! soundcloud.com/metropolitan_c…
I love how the default iOS weather app displays the low-to-high temperatures in the 10-day forecast via a graph, and uses opacity for type to imply the low/high hierarchy. So why on earth does it not use the same system for today’s forecast? And why switch to high-to-low, too?
Very pleased to announce that, in September, I’ll be speaking at @allflowslive — a new event from the lovely folks behind @MKGeekNight. allflows.live
I’ve just discovered (via @Zetafonts) that the latest #TypeCampus “Type Trends” book is available as a PDF for free. Super interesting read. rd2dmpg4.sibpages.com
Boris finally resigning is good. The man’s an idiot, and he should’ve gone a long time ago. But don’t celebrate too hard: there are many, many, many worse Tories than him waiting in the wing, priming themselves for their moment. Here’s one: theguardian.com/politics/2022/…
Although I’m web3-sceptical and not that excited by NFTs and the culture surrounding them, seeing 2 friends — @brendandawes & @JoelleSnaith — do great things in this area is what keeps my interest somewhat piqued. Would’ve loved to see them both speaking at @prooofofpeople today. twitter.com/prooofofpeople…
While walking the dog, I ran into my neighbour, who listens to the @creativeboom podcast and was surprised to find muggins ’ere on episode #81. Go on, join my neighbour, and give it a listen! Thanks again, @katylcowan. 🙏 creativeboom.com/podcast/elliot…j
Pro-tip for young designers: being proficient in a certain piece of software will always be secondary to understanding design, layout, typography, tension, structure and image. Nail that, and the rest will fall into place.

It doesn’t matter how many times I use it, I’m continually amazed at how much @realmacsoftware’s Squash is able to compress JPGs without any perceptible loss of quality. Images usually end up about 10–20% of their original file size. realmacsoftware.com/squash/
Wow, content marketers are getting pretty, er, inventive these days.
I think about this capo placement far too much. This should have been the end of him.

Huge thanks to everyone at #smashingconf for listening to my talk yesterday, especially those of you who said such kind things about it afterwards, either online or in person. 🙏 And thanks to the organisers of@smashingconff for inviting me along. Looking forward to day 2!
It was so nice to have @katylcowan over to the studio to nerd out about the glory days of web design (and much more) for the latest episode of the @creativeboom podcast! It’s now live here: twitter.com/creativeboom/s…
Today, Bandcamp are donating profits to the NAACP LDF for #juneteenth. I also want to do some good close to home, so I’ll be donating 50% of all sales on the label’s Bandcamp to @ukblm. Need an extra incentive? Use “juneteenth22” for 30% off everything. unknownmovements.bandcamp.com
Great to see the SoundCloud app on iOS finally get updated with @acolorbright’s design work. So many lovely little refinements. acolorbright.com/en/work/soundc…
Last night I decided to dust off my APC40 to mix down some new tracks in a more spontaneous way — especially as they were made “in the box”, with no hardware. It helped avoid the temptation to focus on the screen and draw in automation. Looking forward to sharing the output soon!

About this time next week, I should be waking up in San Francisco (oh, who am I kidding? I will have been awake for hours) and will be getting geared up to speak at @smashingconf! Who’s coming? Looking forward to seeing a few SF-based friends I haven’t seen in a long time! 🤗
