There's been two lessons of the pandemic: firstly, The Good That People Do – how hospitality has responded, as we’ve been highlighting. Secondly, the sheer exuberant warmth people have for bars, cafés and restaurants. #CrumsTakeaway
Melissa: We'll hopefully be able to expand the industry much more than we realised and if we look into how we can use technology and new ways of building into younger peoples skillsets, there's chance to widen what we can all do with offerings and grow again. #CrumbsTakeaway
This Great Pause has also been the Great Accelerator: pre-existing trends amplified. Which trends are you expecting to be accelerated? Alistair: When people come into the mix they're going to be vital and hopefully there are greater opportunities for those working within.
Alistair: We've got a duty to pay back to the people that work so enthusiastically for us, despite all challenges they've been astonishing; supportive, hard-working and doing their utmost to ensure colleagues and customers are protected and venues were safe. #CrumbsTakeaway
Joining in on this great zoom meeting- it’s always great to hear from like minded colleagues…

Ben: For years the industry's had to be resilient, the moment you stand still is when you struggle and that's been our core strength, always adapting to change. There's been so many heart-warming stories out of this and certainly a shift towards helping locally. #CrumbsTakeaway
Aine: How can we put sustainability at the heart of our businesses? We're very lucky in Bristol and in the south west to have a city of active people that are willing to get involved, help us out and contribute to the community, which is great for all of us and our offerings.
Melissa Toney of our silver sponsor @GLLawUK. GL was formerly Gregg Latchams and is a great supporter of the hospitality sector; Melissa is its head of regulatory and licensing. Here's more on GL Law:
Phil Haughton of @BetterFoodCo: organic, local and ethical food supplier. Now employing over 100 people Check them out here:
Aine Morris of @bristolfooduni – an informal collection of restaurants, food businesses and community organisations. Also chief exec of the @afoodfestival!
Ben Danielsen, GM of the iconic @royalcrescent Hotel & Spa in Bath: an exemplar for top-end hospitality and something of a bellwether for the region, given its notional and international reach Check out the Royal Crescent here:
Alistair Darby of @brainsbrewery in Cardiff: 130-years-old, brews more than 20 million pints a year, has 150+ pubs now leased to Marstons; Alistair was chief exec until that deal in Feb this year; and is now a non-exec Check them out here:
We end with an expert panel drawn from a variety of the hospitality sector: Alistair Darby of @brainsbrewery in Cardiff; Ben Danielsen of the iconic @royalcrescent in Bath; @aine_morris of @bristolfooduni/@afoodfestival; Phil Haughton of @BetterFoodCo; and Melissa Toney @GLLawUK.
Now for our second course of The Good That People Do featuring Winslade Manor in Exeter; Good Day Café in Bath; @boxebristol in Bristol; and @waterlootea in Cardiff – presented by Lisa Evans, the editor of @CardiffLifeMag. Hear from them all here:…
Kate: We've mostly been given 3 month thinking without much long-term or strategic plan for recovery, every time we've looked into it, Covid has hit again. We need to look at getting the economy moving quickly as debt is a major obstacle for hospitality.…
Another thing worth considering is the cultural and social importance of the sector with people from all over the world, as well as locals, enjoying our bars, restaurants, cafes etc.. and with this, there will always be a place for these businesses in society. #CrumbsTakeaway
Kate: Government are looking at targeting the hospitality sector not just with financial backing but also support in terms of regulations, and it remains on the critical list. They see it as a vital part of the economy and an essential contributor.…
Please do get in touch with today's #CrumbsTakeaway sponsor @GLLawUK if you require any advice on licensing or regulatory issues.…

Let’s welcome Kate Nicholls of @UKHofficial, the authoritative trade body voice for the hospitality sector. Kate is the chief exec and has been a vigorous advocate for the sector, lobbying government, keeping a high-profile presence on media to articulate the case for support.
We have to accept that the knock-on affect of this for consumer demand and traditional numbers we'd usually expect will probably take a couple of years to return to what we consider something more normal. #CrumbsTakeaway
Greg: We've got all of our relationships with sponsors, brewers etc.. and it's critical to stay in touch with them all to navigate this situation and bring everyone along on the ride with you. #CrumbsTakeaway
Dom: We're looking at business decisions such as duration times on tables, select, streamlined menus that suit the situation. Educating your customers on the changes you've made and why is essential.…
Yvan: We're waiting for July for our events to kick off as the reopening unfolds as well as May for inside the venue. Faye: We had to reimagine our space and running supper clubs allowed us to control numbers and take bookings and we're looking forward to running the Clubs again
Now we interrupt these proceedings to hear a word about our magazines and awards – and how we promote and support the food and drink scenes in the region. #CrumbsTakeaway
Let’s welcome Dom Borel of @Bianchibristol; Josh Eggleton; Faye & Yvan Williams of Exeter’s famed @theoddfellows; Joe Cussens of The @BathPubCo; and Greg Wells of We Are Beer and Craft Beer Festivals #CrumbsTakeaway

What have been your positives? #CrumbTogether It's definitely been tough for the sector, if you haven't reassessed your models even more-so, however people will always want to visit. We should all continue to think of others and our community with everything that we do.
Mitch: People that go to restaurants love them, we're very social creatures. All the foods and items we've ordered during the pandemic are links back to these places we all know and love, and when we can get back to normality it'll surely be a great year!…
Mitch: We ensured all staff were communicated to and it was vital that we were looking after everybody. So much has changed but its been essential throughout this to keep your teams in the loop. #CrumbsTakeaway
Mitch: I've always loved how everything we do is based upon having amazing seafood and during lockdown I thought how can we get this out to the people. We'd started seafood boxes which were relatively simple and expanded on it to create a unique business.…
