Willis Carrier was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1985. He was later named one of TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century" in 1998. So when you’re cooling off inside this summer, make sure to thank this Cornellian! 👏
Word of Carrier’s success spread. In 1915, he founded Carrier Engineering Corporation, which pioneered the design & manufacture of refrigeration machines to cool large spaces. Two years later, Carrier hired Margaret Ingels as America’s first woman air-conditioning engineer. 👩‍🔬
He designed a system that would help stabilize humidity, forming the basis of the air conditioner. Carrier’s design had air travel through a filter and pumped over chilled coils, and then released into a closed setting using a fan.
On July 17, 1902, Willis Carrier – one year after graduating from @CornellEng – designed the world’s first air conditioning system. In honor of @carrier’s 120th anniversary, learn more about this ❄️cool❄️ invention that would go on to fundamentally change the world. ⬇️
