By 1971, new competition had popular kung-fu movies, while the Wing Va played "mainly to older members of the Chinese community... no subtitles." But soon Chow was first to book Shaw Bros movies in Toronto, and the Shaw-scope logo replaced Wing-Va as the theatre name in ads.

Before I see a bad take: no, the Emergencies Act does not suspend the Charter. In fact, the preamble to the Act explicitly subjects the decision to enact it as subject to Charter rights.

2/ The more we fall for the “foreign donations!” complaint, the more you’ll notice Conservative political types directing this anger toward legislation to target and ban environmental and other rights groups who receive small amounts of money from foreign donors.
Retweeted by Colin Geddes
The important thing about the data from the GiveSendGo leak is not that over half the donations came from the US, it’s that so many of the donations were large money amounts from Canadian big business and corporate owner types. See @AndAlbertson’s timeline for research on them.

If I’m out with nine other people, and the host says “Let’s get a pizza,” and I’m the only one saying “No, let’s order raw veal,” then the party isn’t divided, the host isn’t playing wedge politics, and I’m a tiny minority pushing a bad choice that jeopardizes everyone’s health.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m sure that when the Prime Minister encourages everyone to get vaccinated, and most people do, and you choose not to, and people give you a hard time for that decision, I’m sure that feels like wedge politics. But generally speaking, it’s not.

I keep seeing these “Maybe Trudeau will learn from all this and stop playing wedge politics with these mandates,” and I’m sorry, but it really just feels like loser talk. The only time he really did that was during the last election, when O’Toole gave him an open net.
