📢TAKE ACTION: Policymakers at every level have long made decisions that harm children and leave them without the support they need. Call on your policymakers to stop prison pipelines and fund community
The mother of a plaintiff in the case was quoted in a @TheCity & @propublica article, saying “If I left it up to the system, my son would be gone already."…
Earlier this year, we filed a lawsuit against the state of New York for denying Medicaid-eligible children their legal right to community mental health services—putting children's health and their lives at risk.
Because of the lack of funding, a shortage of child psychiatrists, and our fragmented health care systems, more families desperate to meet their children's #MentalHealth care needs are resorting to relinquishing their parental rights. #ChildMentalHealthCrisis
For kids with #MentalHealth conditions, instead of receiving the support they need, they are often met by law enforcement and criminalized for their behavior due to unaddressed trauma. #DecriminalizeYouth
You may remember 15-year-old Grace who was incarcerated after not doing her online schoolwork at the start of the pandemic.… @jodicohen, @propublica
Did you know that children and young adults become entangled with the juvenile and criminal legal system for normal teenage behavior? For things called “status offenses” like running away from home or missing curfew or skipping school or not doing homework.
With unrelenting attacks against #LGBTQ+ children and their families, protecting their mental health is essential. Read our latest blog at… for ways to take action to demand change and to learn more. #PrideMonth

Now is a moment where many people will be erasing the vast experiences that trans people have while seeking abortion care. The deliberate decision to remove trans people results in a incomplete story about what this SCOTUS decision criminalizing abortion means. #DobbsvJackson

Today we honor all father relationships. To those who have raised, mentored, fostered, loved, and nurtured a child. And to those whose hearts may be a little heavier today. #HappyFathersDay Artwork on Instagram: @_littlemissfoodie

Register to join us for a discussion on solutions to decriminalize and deinstitutionalize children on June 22 at 4 PM ET/ 1 PM PT:
The criminalization of #MentalHealth conditions has devastating consequences—especially for Black and Brown children and youth in #FosterCare. They often end up pushed into institutions and through the school-to-prison and foster care-to-prison pipelines. #DecriminalizeYouth
We must work to close these pipelines, end the criminalization of children—particularly of Black and Brown children—and invest in community services that help children heal and keep families together.
The time to decriminalize mental illness is now. #ChildMentalHealthMatters

In 2020, 18.2% of removals of Black children from their homes were due to alleged physical or sexual abuse, while 64.72% of removals of Black children were due to neglect—which is often conflated with conditions of poverty. [4/] #SupportedNotReported
Despite decades of literature and data highlighting how racism plagues the #ChildWelfare system Black & Brown children continue to be disproportionately surveilled, policed, reported, and removed from their families and communities. [3/]
Less than half of the 400,000+ children in #FosterCare return home to their families, despite the fact that the vast majority of children are unnecessarily placed in the system for reasons of poverty, not neglect. [2/]
Did you know the federal government spends TEN TIMES more on foster care and adoption than on services to preserve and reunite families? #KeepFamiliesTogether 🧵[1/]

In order to close the cradle-to-prison pipeline, we must address: ✔️Over-surveillance, over-policing, & institutional racism ✔️Institutionalization of youth ✔️Inaccessible & inappropriate community supports & mental health services.
The child welfare & criminal legal systems work hand-in-hand in the destruction of families, rather than providing the conditions for communities to thrive and to #KeepFamiliesTogether. #InvestInCommunities
The #ChildWelfare system undoubtedly feeds the Cradle-to-Prison Pipeline. A recent survey found that as many as a quarter of people in prisons spent time in foster care. #ItsAKidIssue
