The UK government's ruthless and reckless policies that "go for growth” require us all to ask the essential questions that Donella Meadows - mother of systems thinking - set out decades ago. So join me in answering these questions... 1/n

The irony her is that her name was Jina. She was deprived of her birth name,a Kurdish name, under laws that prohibited her ethnic people- Kurds- from visibility. Mahsa was the Persian name on her passport, but her name was Jina. Let's say her name: Jina Amini.

Personhood laws can be, and have been (hundreds of times), used to “deprive pregnant women of their liberty through arrests or forced medical interventions.” And if they don’t force the medical procedure on you, you could be charged for refusing it. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/23262772/

These aren’t just hypothetical scenarios. In 2019, an Alabama woman was charged w/ manslaughter after she was shot 5 times in the abdomen, which led to the death of the fetus. Police said she was culpable b/c she “failed to remove herself from harm’s way.” nytimes.com/2019/06/27/us/…

If you ingest marijuana/THC, if you take prescription drugs, if you refuse certain medical interventions, if you miss a couple prenatal care appointments, if you’re in an abusive relationship…etc, any of these could end up being enough to send you to prison for fetal assault.

See, there’s no endpoint for criminalizing behaviors. Once you say it’s ok to police & criminalize some behaviors, you open the door to doing the same for all behaviors. If you suffer an adverse pregnancy outcome, your behavior could be used against you in a manslaughter trial.

ACOG defines criminalization of pregnancy as punishing pregnant women for behaviors that wouldn’t be punishable or criminal outside of pregnancy. This includes drug use — illicit & Rx — and smoking, refusing certain medical procedures, but also a lot more. acog.org/clinical-infor…

As a grad student, one of the areas I studied was the criminalization of pregnancy through maternal behavior. That’s the next step in the attack on abortion rights. Basically, anything a pregnant woman does — or doesn’t do — can end up under a microscope; then, in a court room.

It’s striking to me how many women don’t seem to grasp that the attack on abortion rights isn’t just about abortion — it’s about policing, controlling, & punishing women, and it won’t stop at banning abortion. If you think you’re “safe”, you’re misunderstanding what’s happening.
