Another unswaddling for the TL
I just reread Dune and it’s hilarious how antagonistic it is to being filmed. The first 250 pages are dense intra- and inter-planetary politics. A chapter will have 40 pages about tripping out in a cave then a one paragraph second-hand description of a crucial, cinematic battle.

lactose intolerant or just overtired and cranky: the baby wilt story
just sneezed and woke up my child who has refused to sleep all day and just finally fell asleep 20 minutes ago if you’re wondering how I’m doing rn
Babies are wild. They’ll accidentally stay awake for ten minutes too long, having a fun time making silly faces with dad after eating, and then will not be able to sleep for the next eight hours because it was simply too much for them to handle
@byrdinator I would also include high school students who aspire to be journalists but college simply isn’t an option. This is one of the pain points for me that is continually overlooked.

(It’s really nice this internship is paid so well but it would also be cool to see more news organizations accept applications from high school grads who are already in the workforce and younger college students for these kinds of things too.) twitter.com/TracyJan/statu…

the best part of the baby sleep cycle is when they start having a lil imaginary snack
You'd think the central lesson of these wars would have stuck: it's not always about what happens to America and Americans. Biden could have saved thousands of lives by making better (or less cynical) policy decisions; and the value of those lives is not a function of citizenship

some of y’all really want everyone to think the leader of the most powerful country on the planet is the victim right now rather than the tens of thousands of refugees he resisted evacuating sooner because of political concerns
Despite suggestions to the contrary, Afghanistan is a large country with many cities, and we left our friends stranded in all of them. This is not a "wait and see" situation where early incompetence gives rise to a smooth evacuation and all ends well. The die was cast weeks ago.

I didn’t want to link the video because I feel like people should have to opt in to watching something this painful instead of it just popping up in their feed. But this is the one I’m talking about. Does anyone involved in the evacuation know what happened to this baby? twitter.com/OmarHaidari1/s…
for the record I am not a cop!! I just wanted to know how big a bomb would have to be to affect our apartment nearby lol the general advice seems to be to stay away from the windows. Thank you Twitter people :)
are any of y’all bomb experts? I have some dumb questions to ask and Google is not helping
“We have been screaming from the rooftops that we need to get these allies out,” @KrishVignarajah said. “The undeniable truth is that we had both the means and the time to save those in danger, and yet we’ve neglected to act in any meaningful way.” theatlantic.com/politics/archi…
From July 14th. The US has mostly withdrawn from Afghanistan, and we still have no plan to save interpreters left behind. taskandpurpose.com/news/afghan-in…
Retweeted by Haley Byrd Wilt
This was not the US being overtaken by events, or making the best of a bad hand, or even a failure of planning. It was a deliberate policy choice by the President, to whom keeping Afghans out of the United States trumped any moral or legal responsibility to our staunchest allies

This is not a small matter. We didn't say to these people, "sorry, you're on your own"; we promised for twenty years to protect the most vulnerable from reprisal if they worked with us, used their achievements to boast about our progress, and blamed them after leaving them to die
Retweeted by Haley Byrd Wilt
The reason the failures of troop withdrawal are the central issue in our Afghan policy right now is that the withdrawal appears to have been deliberately conducted in a way that minimized the number of Afghans, including visa holders, who would physically reach the United States twitter.com/mattyglesias/s…

.@clarissaward on the scene just outside Kabul airport: "I've covered all sorts of crazy situations. This was mayhem. This was nuts. This was impossible for an ordinary civilian, even if they had their paperwork...There's no coherent system for processing people."

Congress has approved millions of dollars for that effort and pressed the administration to secure agreements with third countries to host these folks while they’re processed. “We need to save lives and then worry about immigration status,” @sethmoulton told me in an interview.

The interpreter we wrote about in this story has been trying to get to the airport for the last three days. He’s been turned away, he and his family have been beaten by Afghan security forces and he’s had his phone thrown by an American. He’s in tears. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

Some good news: an Afghan interpreter I have been messaging with has made it past the Taliban and crowds, through the airport’s entry control point. He has his family with him, they are now with the Marines. (Photo from Instagram.)

I can't get my mind around why people are conflating two orthogonal issues—whether withdrawing from Afghanistan was the right thing to do, and why there was a total failure to plan for the safe and orderly departure of people it was our *policy* under four administrations to save

Reuters’ reporting makes a more direct claim that it was Biden himself worried about the politics. This is a pattern. twitter.com/byrdinator/sta…
I deleted a post this morning quoting Politico about this because I felt bad I didn’t wait to see if other outlets confirmed it. Reuters is reporting this now, so I’ll say it again: Prioritizing political concerns over the lives of tens of thousands of people is reprehensible. twitter.com/tedhesson/stat…
