This absolutely true: Brian Stelter's final NYTimes story was about my family. Nine years later, 13 days before his final CNN show, he invited me to be a guest on it. (I demurred.) He should probably avoid asking me to get involved in anything he intends to keep doing.

And then you're live. Up on a tightrope without a net. Just you and the viewers. I guess it's kinda like... tweeting. I am grateful to the producers and directors and staffers who made the finale possible. /end of 🧵
Then came the sign-off, which I partly wrote ahead of time and partly ad libbed on live TV. My HS journalism teacher liked to say that "the greatest inspiration is the deadline." The most intense deadline of all is the floor director saying 3... 2... 1... cnn.com/videos/media/2…
The first guest on the first episode of "Reliable" in 1992, @BrianKarem, became the last guest on the last episode. "The future does portend well for reporters," he said. Social media will always have raw info first, but "vetted facts" are the key currency cnn.com/videos/busines…
Panelists @Deggans, @claireatki and @davidzurawik dissected 30 years of media industry change – digital media, diversity, distrust of media, and Big Tech's disruptions cnn.com/videos/busines…
"We don't talk about freedom of the press because journalists are special creatures who need special defense; it's because journalism plays a vital role in upholding democracy, in holding the powerful to account & exposing corruption & keeping us all safe" cnn.com/videos/busines…
We also talked about the future. @Deggans said "I think the problem is that people put a political lens on top of something that is about preserving democracy, and about holding politicians accountable." cnn.com/videos/busines…
Committee to Protect Journalists prez @jodieginsberg said "the job of a journalist, we always say, is not to ask people whether or not it's raining and take both sides, it's to GO outside and feel the rain falling on you." cnn.it/3KiVBDX
"Authoritarians, in order to stay in power, need to convince the people that the press is the enemy," said The Atlantic's @JeffreyGoldberg. So the press needs to "stay the course and report the truth plainly and fearlessly..." cnn.com/videos/busines…
So we opened with @carlbernstein, who said "the truth is not neutral..." cnn.com/videos/busines… And said the "most important story in the world today" is "the pendulum swinging against democracy all over the world" >>> cnn.com/videos/busines…
🧵 alert: I'm going to take a little Twitter hiatus, but before I do, I want to thank the guests who made Sunday's finale of@ReliableSourcess so special. From a production point of view, we wanted to summarize many years of segments into one final episode...
Sunday's "Reliable Sources" averaged 769,000 total viewers for the final episode, up 10 percent v last week. It was the most watched @CNN show of the day.
