My interview in Kabul with David Beasley, exec director of the World Food Programme, will be running on BBC News outlets today. He was incredibly strong: Afghanistan is now facing the worst humanitarian crisis on earth. 23m people are marching towards starvation. ‘Shame on us.’

I’m in Bamyan in central Afghanistan & have just interviewed a widow with 7 young children. They’re facing starvation. This area has thousands of poor people threatened by famine. Yet a payment of £200,000 would ensure that every single one of them gets through the winter.

Two large bags of flour, one small one of soy bean and ten liters of cooking oil. Each family getting this handout from @WFP in #Kabul today must live off it for two months. Bread is not enough for hungry, growing children, but it will keep them alive. #afghanistan

At @WFP food distribution site in #Kabul. Most of the men here have never needed food handouts before, but jobs in manual labor have dried up. For 14 million #Afghans there is not nearly enough food on the table and economic collapse means dangerous levels of hunger will rise.
