All that had to happen was the government pay everyone to stay home for 6 weeks. That’s it.

Taking deep breaths and releasing things you can’t control is a discipline.
Everything can not be reduced to a transaction, a dollar value, an itemized list of commodities. That way of thinking is why the world is on fire now.
This society’s obsession with consumption extends to the way we treat people, especially famous people, by consuming them as commodities.
Simone Biles would be just as much a hero, just as deserving of support & love if she had decided the best thing for her health was to leave Tokyo altogether last week. She owes us nothing.
Nowhere in Genesis does it say Adam & Eve ate an apple. That’s an example of how the collective consciousness is shaped by exposure to repetitive, homogeneous imagery. There are endless examples like this in culture & it shows the power of imagery & symbols.
I am not an epidemiologist. But it’s worth noting that when studying for my mph I had my fair share of epi coursework and by fair share I mean absolutely enough to know that at this rate, we will not see an end to the pandemic any time soon.

I’m really happy for Simone Biles. She continues to operate on her own terms. She’s not obligated to be an inspiration, she simply is.

Adjusted for population Florida had 12X as many kids infected as Massachusetts last week And Louisiana? About 10X So what's going on? None of these kids are vaccinated! So why are infection rates so much lower in MA? Right, because kids are protected by adults 4/5

Would love to be pleasantly surprised but most analysis from climate scientists & sociologists seem to indicate otherwise. The neoliberal addiction to economic growth & limitless consumption is simply not sustainable. It’s not a matter of philosophy but of time, science & math.
Slowly coming to grips w/ reality that we’ll live thru collapse of capitalism globally in nxt couple decades & there won’t be the necessary political or social organization required to transition to more humane or humanistic system in time to avoid a period of massive devastation
“We don’t really know where he would have got that from because we do keep him… pretty much in a bubble because we don’t know how things affect him when he does get sick.”…

States/counties say they don’t have staff to process rental assistance requests-despite the fact that they can use 10% of ERA funds for staffing/admin costs. Meanwhile, cities like St. Louis didn’t hesitate to *increase* staff to execute evictions.…

I think it’s really cool that Joe Manchin is hosting GOP Senators at his houseboat parties on a $700,000 mini-yacht while Americans can’t pay hospital bills, are being evicted from their homes, and dying from COVID. Sounds fun.

I know we went thru this last year but ppl respond to trauma in different ways. Mass death is traumatic. If ppl want to distract themselves, that’s ok. If ppl want to openly grieve, that’s ok. We don’t have to police how other ppl cope. There’s no singular, proper way to cope.
Not great that the most authoritarian of think tanks is now explicitly trying to make a political alliance with the armed wing of the state.…

I think the online space went from mostly jokes & live tweeting to discussing serious issues because the national mood went from optimistic to high stress/uncertainty in that same span of time. Gotta find healthy balance on here just as in life offline
Stability is an illusion in this system. It’s always relative. You’re middle class until you’re not. And then maybe you manage to make it back to stability or maybe you don’t. Maybe you never approach stability in your lifetime. Maybe you hit the lottery. “The dream” is the ether
And for all the older adults I see who are clearly homeless, I think of the youth we don’t always notice. I was one of those young people. Dressed well enough, working at a Duane Reade, sleeping on the A train.

It’s happening again now with gentrification & displacement. Additionally they are attempting to limit access to any public space by criminalizing homelessness, shutting down community centers/meeting space & increasing police surveillance & violent sweeps of public parks.
Driving Black ppl off the land in the south & mid-west was key to overthrowing Reconstruction & establishing Jim Crow over a century ago. In the aftermath of the Civil Rights & Black Power Movements, they did it again with so-called “urban renewal” projects.
The systematic, government-backed effort to deprive people of access to stable housing is part of a profitable industry but also a strategic way of preventing our ability to establish politically & economically organized communities.
Like voting rights, housing & land justice is another major issue of the civil rights movement that is being deliberately rolled back as part of an overall effort to entrench a permanent underclass of ppl who serve as both cheap labor & an exploitable source of quick capital
For folks who are new to the housing issue, I’m just using Twitter right now to highlight how this is a situation of government malfeasance and not at all an issue that caught folks by surprise. Housing is overlooked precisely b/c it most often affects poor &/or marginalized folk
Can’t solve the pandemic under capitalism. Can’t solve the climate emergency under capitalism. Can’t stop this eviction crisis under capitalism. I’m seeing a common denominator.

We’ve been asking state & federal officials for months to keep the moratorium in place at the very least until all the funds were distributed. A group of NC advocates, nearly all Black women, were verbally attacked by one of the officials overseeing the program & that was that…
Why is this a polling question instead of an infographic explaining why ER doctors are begging us to wear masks right now?…
A sad milestone in Mecklenburg County. The COVID-19 vaccine is safe, free and incredibly effective at preventing severe disease, hospitalization and death. Get it if you are eligible. It may save your life.

All the poor messaging & policy decisions have stemmed from lawmakers not wanting to take actions that are necessary but which challenge the neoliberal philosophy that private industry can solve massive public problems…
I'm starting to think, perhaps, just maybe, perhaps, Covid-19 isn't a benign illness in children? There are many Op-Eds by famous doctors telling us not to worry since 'kids don't get sick.' Maybe we should also listen to the Physician-in-Chief at Children's Hospital New Orleans?…

…who are the ones often doing *unpaid* work of distributing info to impacted ppl & who provide important human infrastructure for poorly administered government programs. All this “gee golly we didn’t know what to do or expect” from officials is bogus, intentional neglect. 2/2
Please understand this— governments claiming that they don’t know what to do about the housing situation spend most of their time ignoring the grassroots community advocates who are in regular contact with impacted ppl, show up to mtgs to propose solutions… 1/
And the fact that there’s little mention of the foreclosure crisis when ppl are discussing evictions is further indication we’re on the precipice of a broader housing crisis that we’ve been building toward for years now w/ the lack of affordable housing
People assume they know what the face of the eviction crisis looks like. They assume it’s all the people they don’t have to care about. This hits a much larger cross section of the populace than many appreciate. It will only compound all the crises facing cities right now.
Want to stress again that no one actually knows the full scope of the eviction crisis because the lack of reliable record keeping. Allowing millions to be evicted in such a short time span will have reverberating consequences & destabilizing effects we can only estimate.
Waiting for the next time the stock market nosedives because that’s the first time they’ll acknowledge the economic impact of the poor decisions they’re making now
