.@NimkoAli’s reminder of the cost of failure, and the importance of working with people you may only agree with on one issue makes this @bbcnickrobinson interview very powerful. podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/pol…

A superb defence by @bbcnickrobinson of the importance of preserving and cherishing impartiality in British broadcasting, and the dangers of polarising society if we don't. And it's also a fascinating conversation. twitter.com/IainDale/statu…

8 “events”. 83 people. 126 fines but just 1 for @BorisJohnson. The impact of #partygate will depend on whether voters conclude the PM was unlucky to be “ambushed by a cake” or think instead “Hold on a second …”. Suspect most made up their minds a long time ago

The whole point of my Political Thinking series is to have conversations with politicians (& others) that reveal & surprise rather than repeat what you can hear on regular news shows twitter.com/prospect_clark…
This is how Ukraine’s Eurovision presenter and commentator Timur Miroshnychenko reacted to the news of Kalush Orchestra’s victory. Due to Russia’s never-ending rocket attacks, Timur had to go on air from a bomb shelter.

Politicians are not all the same & they’re not all in it for themselves but their behaviour in recent times has made them harder to defend. My piece for Radio Times. Looking forward to a new series of “Political Thinking” which aims to show what really makes them tick.

What does Macron’s re-election, Le Pen’s highest vote ever & a record number of abstentions mean for France & for everyone else ? Best of Today podcast - front line reports, interviews & analysis - out now 🇫🇷 bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0…cRJ
Macron promises to be a President for all of France. We’ll be discussing how possible that is tomorrow on @BBCr4today
Waiting for the result in Paris. ⁦@EmmanuelMacron⁩ supporters practising their flag waving to greet his re-election. If ⁦@marinelepen⁩ tops 40% & abstentions top 20% it may not feel like the victory they once dreamt of. More on ⁦@BBCr4today⁩ from 6 am
Do you think they might have realised in Number 10 that promising a vote once all the fines &’all the evidence are known might not be such a good idea after all ? twitter.com/BBCPolitics/st…
Watching Macron v Le Pen debate. The President is ruthlessly targeting his opponent for taking a loan from Russia - “Russia is you banker” #DebatMarineMacron
It’s rather revealing that when the minister of the day @scullyp was asked several times on @BBCr4today what @BorisJohnson was apologising for he didn’t appear to know twitter.com/bbcnickrobinso…
Oops wrong Paul Scully. Will delete and retweet !
Context is all in politics - the looming local elections, the war in Ukraine & the slide in the standing of @RishiSunak all explain why @BorisJohnson looks safe in his job today as much as his repeated apologies
Again & again @BorisJohnson apologises & insists he’s not minimising his wrongdoing. This after his ministers have spent days suggesting breaking his own COVID rules was the equivalent of speeding. So far it appears to be working for him with just one Tory MP calling on him to go
“Integrity is about doing the right thing even when no one is looking”. Former Tory Chief Whip calls on @BorisJohnson to resign twitter.com/mark_j_harper/…
What is @BorisJohnson apologising for? He says people had a right to expect better of their Prime Minister before insisting that it didn’t “occur to me then or subsequently that a gathering in the Cabinet room could be a breach of the rules.” So is he sorry that you’re sorry?
Clearly delivery & not rhetoric will be the test of any new policy but I’ve no doubt today’s announcement will please the crowd the Conservatives want to please. Others - including those who aren’t in that crowd and didn’t like my phrase - less so
Is govt asylum policy “crowd pleasing” as I said on @BBCr4today? Well, @Ipsos poll shows 60% dissatisfied with immigration policy. Half of them cite failure to curb small boat crossings. More detail/nuance here. britishfuture.org/where-is-publi…

Congratulations @ChrisMasonBBC on becoming the BBC’s new Political Editor who will become the nation’s trusted guide to the ins & outs and the ups & downs of our political life. The job’s a great privilege to have. I know you’ll relish it
For now the PM & Chancellor have decided to hang together because if they don’t they sure as hell would …(feel free to complete the well know saying)
Here’s the Chancellor’s statement …
He’ll have to say something before I say “Good Morning” on @BBCr4today at 06.00. Infact, he’ll have to say it in time for the @BBCNews at 10 & #TomorrowsPapersToday.
The silence of Sunak is deafening tonight
Why won't PM be forced to resign by Tory MPs ? Public reasons - "Don't you know there's a war on?!" + "Zelensky backs him". Private reasons - "Don't you know there's an election on?!" + "There's no alternative - Sunak ?! After the week he's had ?! Prime Minister Liz Truss?!"
Well, well. The Energy Secretary @KwasiKwarteng denied my suggestion this morning that the government’s plan to make it easier to build more wind farms had been blown over by the opposition of Tory MPs. Wonder how he explains this ? twitter.com/paulwaugh/stat…
There have been so many images from Ukraine which make you stop & gulp but this really moved me. A mother has written her name & family contact details on the back of her daughter so she can be identified if the worst happens
An important thread on the horrors being revealed as Russian troops retreat from towns near Kyiv. (@Jack_Watling analysis regularly features on @BBCr4today) twitter.com/jack_watling/s…
The BBC’s coverage from Ukraine tonight is brilliant - forensic, dramatic, intelligent, wonderfully shot, well written, courageous, shocking. Corporation has excelled this last month like no other time in its 100 years. (Though I admit I didn’t see much TV news before 1964.)
