We watched THOR: THE DARK WORLD, somewhat reluctantly, but discovered that there's something to say about brothers Thor & Loki using Family Systems Theory. Sure, their dynamics are reactive, repetitive, and tired, and it turns out this is realistic 🙃drdreapsychology.com/thearkhamsessi…8F
What happens when trauma becomes an occupational hazard? We talked about Iron Man 3 on the show and described the effects of trauma on the job (it's happening to a lot of us): drdreapsychology.com/thearkhamsessi…
Knowing nothing about it (other than it looks old), I started watching John Carpenter's THE FOG.
In brief: They're surprisingly accurate, and watching horror has benefits 😌 In the article,I included topics that can help ppl understand and handle types of traumas involving targeted harassment, assault, and repeated victimhood.
A psychologist* watches the previous HALLOWEEN films for @getFANDOM to find out if they're accurate depictions of serial killers and their victims: fandom.com/articles/hallo… *me 🎃🔪😱😵
Inspired by our recent seafaring D&D game DMed by @ToddStashwick, I treated myself to these TENTACLED cocktail glasses. This decoratively detailed, kraken-style octopus boosts an impressive anchor only to remind us of all we are capable of carrying. Cheers!
Suffice to say, Laurie Strode has gone through a lot since that fateful Halloween in 1978. With #HalloweenKills nearly here, clinical psychologist @ArkhamAsylumDoc examines the psychology of horror’s most iconic final girl for @getFANDOM fandom.com/articles/hallo…

This is the moment when our Half-Elf Ranger @ArkhamAsylumDoc “Grizzly Addams’d” an Owlbear (that was aboard a ship…long story) and co-regulated it (with speaks with animals) out of combat and back into a pen. It was a sight to behold. #dungeonsanddragons

Ahoy! Our D&D group took to the seas last night as part of The Dregs' continued adventures. My half-elf Ranger did not fare so well on the waves, but she did befriend an Owlbear. Ship design and construction by @BWard028
Yes, this was a party for adults! 🤣😃
Finally got to host a Mr. Freeze-themed ice cream social on the rooftop! Wanted to do this all summer. 🍨💙🧊QzUrW

It was a pleasure to do the opening keynote for the first Superhero Therapy Conference! We don't talk about it enough, but even therapists turn to shows and movies for comfort and healing <3

Really appreciated John's take on the unique ways stress impacts folx in arts and entertainment. He admits that the pressures have increased over the decades, and we also talked about advancing mental health support in the industry.
It was a pleasure to work with the Visual Effects Society on the mental health series, REIGNITE YOURSELF. In this episode, Star Wars special effects artist / legend John Dykstra speaks to us about managing burnout in the industry. Watch/listen: youtube.com/watch?v=l-0gUI…
Learning psychology in non-traditional ways: Marvel, DC, Disney, and Netflix... instagram.com/p/CTk6Em8l6Wb/…
Self-labeled as a nerdy psychologist, Dr. Drea uses superheroes, sci-fi, fantasy, comics, and fandom to teach mental health and psychological principles. Her current endeavors have focused on the Marvel Universe. She recently just wrapped up a review of the Disney+ series, Loki!

"I've missed you." - John Williams
When your lightsaber breaks HOURS before the John Williams "Maestro of the Movies" concert at the Hollywood Bowl!!!🥺🥺😬 But then you ca@BlastFTPFTP and they happen to have one in stock! 😄🙌🏽
The show Loki can help viewers build empathy for many types of "divergent" persons (not just time divergent!), helping us see nuanced qualities outside of a narrative of suffering, which is so often the story!
Loki's constant morphing and shifting of the self is a magical strategy but a psychological one as well. Confronting Loki with a version of himself (Sylvie) allows all to see the challenges related to mistrust, his fragile boundaries, and his inner critic.
Because the Loki series *centers* on such a character, viewers begin to experience the disorder intimately: the ups and downs, the self-doubting and the self-sabotaging, and the inability to truly be present with others.
On the show, I identify attributes we see in Loki that are consistent with someone with Borderline Personality Disorder, a mental health condition characterized by difficulties with regulating one's emotions and relating to others.
We did it! We wrapped up our first Marvel "season" of the podcast with our review of the Disney+ series, Loki! 😃😊drdreapsychology.com/must-listen/lo…PTo
When we struggle with mental health, we not only endure the pain that trauma, depression, and anxiety bring into our lives directly, we also grapple with the feeling that we are completely alone in that struggle. praxiscet.com/hero

Knowing how to build a strong team is crucial, especially during a crisis. For our show this week, we rewatched THE AVENGERS (2012) and looked for psychological tools that could be valuable to us as our world faces a crisis. 💪🏾 Read and listen heredrdreapsychology.com/thearkhamsessi…jDo

Last weekend we filmed my portion for an upcoming documentary about science fiction. Loved talking about Close Encounters, Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Aliens and how these films shaped our psychology. What's your all time favorite sci-fi film?

What do y'all think about this Magic Key pass program at Disney? 🤔
So... I have never really liked Captain America. Found his patriotism to be off-putting and low-key triggering. But when we covered CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER on the podcast I developed a whole new appreciation for his values: drdreapsychology.com/thearkhamsessi…
"I need to call it." If we don't protect our mental health, who will? It shouldn't be "radical," "selfish" or a "failure" to choose to preserve your mental safety. twitter.com/i/events/14203…
