If we plan to improve academic achievement for children we need to build foundational cognitive, language, and motor skills K-3. Layering more content when students cannot attend, have diminished working memory, and have poor self-regulation does not work.

Nearly 3/4 of students who test below proficient in 3rd-grade reading remain below proficient in high school (Shaywitz et al., 1992), and are four times more likely to drop out of high school than their peers who test proficient (Hernandez, 2011), Ribner et al., 2017.
