@Therra @JeffDCDC @Angry_Staffer The population of Houma within the city limits is ~ 33,000, but when you count the outlying bayou communities it's MUCH larger and also has been that way for decades.

@weatherdak @ReedTimmerAccu Sadly no. No information since before the eye wall hit yesterday. We trust in the integrity our facility and are hoping for the best.

Monster storm surge aftermath and very tragic damage in Cocodrie, LA just north of the flood gate. Interestingly, hardly any surge south of the gate as it trapped the surge on backside of the eye wall. Note debris line on the east side of canal. We are retrieving Surginators

Louisiana city names be whooping the weather channel’s ass 😂

Terrebonne is in bad shape. No power, no water, no gas. It’s not a stretch to say every structure is damaged. But the most troubling thing at the present is no hospital. Both hospitals were damaged to the point of being closed. #lalege

It took #HurricaneIda 16 hours to travel from landfall at Port Fourchon to finally move out of LA, though wind and rain lasted longer. It was a #hurricane the ENTIRE time! #BeOn4 #Ida @WWLTV

The footage coming out of Houma, Louisiana this morning is awful. Just massive destruction. It’s also barely being talked about by the national media — everyone is focused on New Orleans

We are still trying to connect with three final staff members of @LUMCONscience. Others all accounted for and safe. We know at least one staff member has completely lost thier house and belongings. #Ida
The area around @LUMCONscience looks devestated. Luckily most are fish camps. Still no views of LUMCON. Will try to get down tomorrow. twitter.com/cenewman0/stat…
Thinking about my friends and colleagues along the Gulf coast today, especially @LUMCONscience #LUMCONStrong , which is located basically right where Ida hit

Sending much love to my @LUMCONscience colleagues as everyone starts to assess the damage. Let us know what you need! Lab space, guest room....anything! #LUMCONStrong

My heart is in Louisiana -- thinking about all the wonderful people and nature that I met in Southern Louisiana during my PhD. Photos from some of my favorite spots in Terrebonne (at LUMCON) and in Barataria Bay. #LUMCONStrong #HurricaneIda

We could all probably use a post with a cute #kitty. Miss Sally always makes space in her home for kittens found at the Marine Center until they find their forever home. Like Miss Sally please help those (humans and animals) in need after #Ida #LUMCONstrong

#HappeningNow We still have not been able to connect with the Marine Center. The facility was fairing well yesterday before we lost our cameras. So grateful for all the prayers and thoughts as we continue to assess. Our thoughts go out to all of you. We'll keep you posted.

No power, no water, and no idea when either of those things will be returning. A tough post #Ida chapter starts today for Houma and Southern Louisiana, where many have told me this hurricane is the worst they’ve ever seen. Our live report for @TODAYshow.

Sending out an SOS for supplies and resources to Houma, LA. Apparently I'm one of the few with cell service down here. These people need help ASAP

For several hours today, the winds & storm surge from #HurricaneIda made the Mississippi River flow *backwards* (negative discharge rate in the graph).

Reminder for those who don't remember: after Katrina there was a full court media blitz to portray the survivors as criminals and that NOLA descended into lawless violence. It wasn't true and it won't be true this time.

More importantly, I and the leadership have checked in with a majority of staff and they are safe. Not sure of all the damage to our homes yet. At least one staff member had a neighbor's tree fall into the house.
Update on @LUMCONscience, still no contact with the center. Was fairing quite well as the eye approached. #LUMCONStrong
Thank you! @LUMCONscience, and I mean the people, will need our extended community to help rebuild. twitter.com/cenewman0/stat…
Met some of the most amazing people and lifelong friends out at @LUMCONscience. The people there do the coolest work and made me the scientist and person I am today. Sending love and prayers to them all during this difficult time #LUMCONStrong

We lost all contact with the Marine Center including our public tower cameras. As of 30 minutes ago the building inside and out were fairing well. Most likely, we lost our internet connection. Currently first eye wall of #Ida is close to the Center. Keep us in your prayers.

A few years ago at SciFoo I met @DrCraigMc who told me about @LUMCONscience down in coastal Louisiana & how special it is. He gave me a Challenge Coin. We are keeping the region in our thoughts today as #Ida bears down. I still have my coin but when we visit drinks are on me- K

I’ve been #LUMCONstrong since 2012 an have to original shirt to show it (spot me in the original photo)! My hometown is being hard hit by #HurricaneIda right now and the entire area needs a lot of luck to come out of this one. twitter.com/LUMCONscience/…

Well folks, we just lost contact with @LUMCONscience as the eye of #ida got close to the center. No contact with cameras or weather stations. Keep us in your prayers. #LUMCONstrong
