With the Wings locking up Jonathan Ericsson to a six-year deal, the UFA defence pool gets even shallower. Very few difference makers left.
"The unspoken potential of this deal, we would suggest, is the possibility of an NHL team for Quebec City." torontosun.com/2013/11/26/tsn…
Looking at all the sources of growth, I think the NHL's cap can reach $100-million by the end of this CBA fairly easily.
I'm hoping one of those hockey analytics guys can help spin this TV contract news a little differently.

Folks, I apologized to @TSNBobMcKenzie
last night for the tweet. It was an ill-timed joke and I meant nothing by it. TSN's going to be fine.
Then as the rights fee slowly grows every year over 12 years, it'll scale HRR up annually. Big time cap implications, especially in 2015-16.
NHL looking at massive growth - 5% or more - in 2014-15 from this deal alone. Overall HRR grew at 7.1% annually under last CBA.
Best way to think of new TV deal is percentage of NHL HRR. League made $3.3-billion last full year - $433-million/year obviously big chunk.
Of note too is that Sportsnet's new NHL deal includes coverage of the draft, all-star game and other league events. More than just games.

Story: The oft-injured Joffrey Lupul is injured again. But for how long? fw.to/g6DjvOQ
Sorry had this backwards: Lupul has played in only 57% of the games in the last five seasons, missing 137 since 2008-09.
Lupul will likely become the fifth of Toronto’s top nine forwards to miss 10-plus games in the season’s first 32 games.
Looking at how long athletes typically take with these injuries, I'd say Lupul is out at least a month. Another big blow.
Randy Carlylye: “The diagnosis is he’s got a Grade 2 groin strain. I don’t know what that means. Grade 2? One? I don't know."
Carlyle on Lupul: "It would take a miracle" for him to play this weekend. Sounds like he's out for a while. Needs an MRI to assess damage.
Carlyle says Lupul won't play tomorrow. Grade 2 groin strain.
Leafs playing game at end of practice where six of them stand around net and try and generate rebounds off Bernier to score.
Heard from a lot of surprised people at both TSN and Sportsnet today. No one saw this type of TV deal being done, cutting one side out.
No Joffrey Lupul at Leafs practice today and a shake-up on the defence pairings. Carlyle now speaking quietly at length to the whole group.
Leafs have scored 16 goals and given up 27 this month. And they've gotten .923 goaltending during that span!

Been a privilege being a part of The NHL on TSN the past 12 years. Congrats and best of luck to Rogers/HNIC.
Will have to double check math later in day, but NHL's cap could rise something like $3-million from that TV deal alone (after next season).

Habs have had a few scouts at the Leafs recent games. For what it's worth.
You could tell in the morning that Columbus was fired up for this one. Players were having a tough road trip and wanted a win here.
Was tonight worse than the loss in Vancouver? Might be a tie for Leafs worst games of the season. Lesser opponent tonight I guess.
Carlyle: "It just seemed like we lacked the necessary pace that was required to compete in the game. That’s mindboggling."
