The latest edition of the @LeafReport
podcast is here: Should the Leafs pay Phaneuf? What's the long-term plan? bit.ly/1ktymmz
Will be on @TSN1200
here in a couple minutes talking about my goalie story here theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/…
Early returns on Jerry D'Amigo with the Leafs are pretty good extraskater.com/players/dashbo…
Source: Laviolette "definitely" a top candidate if Isles make coaching change. Me: Move quickly then. He'll have other offers.
Isles are 2-12-2 in their last 16 games. Jack Capuano's seat is about as hot as it can get.
Isles prospect Ryan Strome is AHL's player of week for second consecutive week. He'll be called up. But it's a mess on Long Island.
Bouchard's PDO is currently 93.6, one of worst in NHL. For $2-million, he's worth a gamble by some team extraskater.com/players/dashbo…
Islanders put Pierre-Marc Bouchard on waivers.
"To celebrate the holiday season, Dion Phaneuf and Elisha Cuthbert will make an in-store appearance at Target" tomorrow in Toronto. Hmmmm.
I'll be on @TEAM1040
in Vancouver here shortly talking who knows what...
The good news? Canadian goalies have had an outstanding season this year with Harding, Price, Holtby, Reimer, Bernier Mason etc. excelling.
One revealing chart I didn't get to use: Canadian goalies have had a lower save percentage in every recent NHL season pic.twitter.com/lQeSXYovGj
If you missed it, my piece this weekend examining why Canada is falling behind in developing NHL goaltenders theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/…
The Leafs now have a negative goal differential despite having the best goaltending in the league.
So far, that looks pretty prescient. Leafs shooting percentage way down (especially at evens), PK way, way down, and far more injuries.
Analytics folks predicted Leafs would have trouble repeating last year's highs in areas like shooting percentage, special teams and injuries
If you find yourself heckling reporters or social media folk because you're pissed at a sports team, step away and help a charity.
Leafs at least only have to face Kings, Blues and Blackhawks this week. Oh... right.
Leafs get 1-0 lead after one then get filled in here in the second period. Weak one on Bernier makes it 3-1.
My guess is a graph of the Leafs PK save percentage looks like a line straight down. Reimer/Bernier covered for its mistakes early in year.
Leafs have second best PP in league but doesn't mean much when you give up five more goals on PK than you've scored there.
Leafs PK has killed only 61.8% of opportunities in that span. PK down to 77% on year, fifth worst in NHL.
Now 13 goals. 2-1 Bruins as Krug rips one in.
That's 12 goals allowed by Leafs PK in the last eight games. Unreal how much they're struggling there.
Dougie Hamilton won't return to tonight's game after a collision w/Carl Gunnarson. 5th time this season B's Dman has gone down in 1st period
Leafs have played better against Boston than any other team this season. Which seems weird given the history.
That's Kadri's 41 PIM, nearly double what he had last season.
Holland scores. Almost like this guy should be seeing the ice more than five minutes a game!
No Rielly, you can't go to the WJC. No Rielly, you can't play for the Leafs. No Rielly, we don't know what we're doing.
Fraser and Rielly are the Leafs scratches tonight. Bernier starts. Johnson starts for Bruins.
The biggest possible loss to this Leafs team injury wise has been Phaneuf for a while now. Just logs so many important minutes.
Ruh roh. RT @jonasTSN1050
: Dion Phaneuf just left the pre-game skate.
Read the part about Orpik's lack of courage... RT @BosHeraldSports
: ‘Unfortunate situation’ looking awful for Bruins tinyurl.com/lbo54jw
Men's curling final on right now - winner goes to Sochi. Kamloops' own Jim Cotter in mix with @TeamMorrisBC
. Intense. Where's @RonBurgundy
I play beer league on Sundays because the Leafs never have Sunday home games. Or so we thought. Tonight's first one since 2003 at ACC!
A chart of the Leafs shots for and against since last season. How high can they go? pic.twitter.com/EPL0lS1W2T
Leafs scoring down 24.5% at even strength and up 19% on power play. Problem? That's .55 goals per game drop at evens and .12 increase on PP.
Carlyle on Liles: "I thought he gave us what he does best. I thought he did a heckuva job for us." #freeliles
Carlyle: "I guess when we get a lead, we freeze up. What are we doing? We've talked about it a lot. We're beating it to death."
Carlyle: "We've had some pretty down times here prior to the last two games so no matter how you get the points we're going to take them."
Another bizarre thing from that Sweden story - in this one photo, the guy appears to be talking to his wallet beta.images.theglobeandmail.com/static/sports/…
It's one of few newspaper site comments ever to include the phrase: "Let me tell you, this article couldn't be more accurate."
There's actually a great comment (!) on my goaltending story from a Canadian player in the Swedish league theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/…
Again: only way this ends is if players themselves force NHLPA to support severe sanctions against evil-doers.
it's almost as if fighting is a terrible tool for policing the game.
Since signing his extension, Jonathan Quick has a .902 SV% while all other Kings goalies have combined for a .934. Money well spent.
Leafs at home on a Sunday tomorrow. Last time that happened in regular season was in Feb 2003 (vs NSH)
Will be on @TSN1050Radio
here shortly talking Leafs.
