Gone are the times of searching your newspaper’s local classified for job openings, then calling and speaking with the gatekeeper to find out where to send your resume. With the eruption of the internet, today’s job search looks absolutely nothing like that anymore. Nowadays, job seekers can scour the net 24 hours a day for updated information on online classified sites like craigslist, hundreds of job boards, and company websites. When you find one that seems in our wheelhouse, you just fill out a couple forms, attach your resume, click submit, and wait for a phone call offering an interview. But that’s what all your competitors are doing as well. So what makes you think your resume will get picked out of the middle of the stack (or more likely clicked on amongst many others in the email inbox)?

Imagine a friend has told you about this great product or service, and you hear the owner of it will be at an event talking about it. You’re excited to attend; and when you arrive, there are 1 or 2 people in the room. Although that product/service might be the best thing since sliced bread, the fact that this event isn’t heaving with people, in many ways devalues offering. Whether consciously or subconsciously, we place value and importance on numbers. We use popularity as an indicator of the value of a product/service, and shamefully, even individuals.
